Flooring dilemma!

We have the most beautiful wide original floorboards in our Victorian terrace, the problem is that the joists run from our house through to the next door property. This means we can hear every footstep, the sound that travels between the properties is unbearable, I really want to have wooden floors as they suit our lifestyle with three young children, but not sure how we go about dealing with the sound issues? Can sound proof membranes/underlay be put under any new wood floors? Or can something be done to the joists to reduce the noise? Normal carpet would not be an option as bikes have to come through the house to get to the garden(which is also a total pain) any advice appreciated x
