Hallway decor help!
Hi I am wanting to decorate our hallway but unsure what colour to go for. We have tiles that include grey pink green colours and then the stainless door so I need a colour that would go with both. I am open to any ideas people may have. At the minute as the can see it's very cold and unwelcoming. I am also in the process of painting the front door I was going to do it either a grey or pale olive colour maybe. Thanks

PRO8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoI'd go for the sagey green in the tile, it'll work well with the tiles, and the white wood of the stairs. I'd also paint the front door to match the rest of the woodwork.
I think you do need to colour match to the tiles though, different greens could clash

Comments (8)I would go for greys and whites to give it a spacious feel. If light is an issue try elephants breath by F&B as it will warm the area. Remove all the paper and paint walls. I personally think the dado would look good in white and will match your doors. Panelling under the dado could also look good and wouldn't date. You could try a diy version as shown in pic as panelling is dear. The laminate in the hall looks good so would keep this and personally would go for a neutral colour on the stairs or even try a stripe. you could try blinds instead of curtains. I would also add a couple of big statement lights on the hall and landing. If you really want some wallpaper, then add a feature wall where the console table is or even at the top of the stairs to draw your eye upwards....See MoreHelp needed in how to decorate the hall

Comments (17)I have a hall way very similar to yours, when we moved in it was painted white. I presume the previous owner wanted to improve light levels. It had the reverse effect! It made the space seem gloomier which may be related to the front of the house being north facing, what direction does your house face as this may influence paint choices. I love colour but go neutral in a space like a hall way as it links all the rooms in the house and in Victorian houses is very difficult to decorate, ceiling heights etc. We used Farrow and Balls London stone as it remained a true neutral,,many other beige/greige had pink/ purple tones which showed in artificial light. I agree with the other comments about stripping the doors particularly if you do decide on white, it will provide contrast and warmth. You could paint a darker colour beneath the dado rail. I would suggest careful placement of mirrors to maximise/ steal light from other rooms. Also pictures with glass bring light to the area too. You could mount pictures on the stair case in line with the treads. I agree with the earlier comment about mounts and frames. I would go for a runner to show off your lovely stair case. Does the door to your kitchen/diner have a glass panel (s) in it, if not I would suggest adding one or two depending on the type of original door you have that will pull light in from that room. Good lighting will help too, it all depends on your personal preference, you could have pendants downstairs and spotlights upstairs. Comments (8)I'll definitely have a look at those colours, thank you. The current colour is Tempting Taupe from Dulux. The tiles are 45cm deep and i have a similar console table (30cm deep) but i have it positioned under the stairs. I'll definitely have a look at some rugs for the floor as you suggested. The current lamps are 30'' in length but I think I could get away with another 8 or 9 '' maybe? I like these styles.. I was thinking of putting up some oversized picture frames on the wall with the map but I'm not sure how it would look, in either a black frame or wooden frame. Definitely not pink, but grey would also look nice. However, grey will not warm really either, the tiles are quite cool colours, so it's a hard one. I do however, think that with the light that comes through the stained glass door, it'll take on a warmer tone.
I can't see what's between the foot of the stairs and the doorway as you come down on the right. Maybe a wooden table with a vase full of pink and purple flowers would go too. That would go with grey and warm the place up a little.

8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoSage green is a great colour. I've used it in one of the rooms in our place. It's quite a soft colour, and suits pictures in wood frames, and loves houseplants.
Rose pink is actually a great colour but I think needs quite a strong decorating theme to stop it looking old fashioned. We have used it for our living room, and it will be teamed with white marble, black and brass accents etc to stop it being too feminine.
As Man About The House Says, painting the front door and paying attention to lighting will make all the difference. If you use warm temperature LED f"filament" style bulbs, or a copper/brass reflective pendant light, you will make it cosier and bring out the warm tones in any paint you use. Cool light bulbs will make it colder. I am using different bulb temps in different rooms to bring out the colours the way I want them - pick colours for how the natural light falls during the day, and change/maintain them in the evenings with your artificial lighting.
