Design Dilemma Kitchens

Matt or gloss kitchen work surface

My kitchen is nearly installed - white gloss handleless and I’ve chosen a grey silestone workto. But should I go for a matt or gloss finish? I want one that is less likely to be marked by fingerprints. Thanks for your advice.

I would definitely go for Matt to contrast your units. I have a matt granite and find it really forgiving with marks etc but it does have texture and a bit of a pattern which might help this.

You could use a grey natural stone with a bit of texture and with white strips in it, so it will match the white of the gloss and the grey of the concrete, here is an example of the type of stone and here of a worktop

Definitely prefer Matt for walls, but love oil based gloss for woodwork. I've tried water based soft sheen for woodwork in the past but found it hard to get a good finish and dirt clings to it. I'm getting los of favourable interest in my latest brilliant white doors and skirting. Cleaning brushes is a bit more trouble but well worth it I think.

You have all been very helpful, I think on balance I am leaning toward Matt, I have looked back at my insipration photos and the majority are matt, coupled with potential issues with keeping gloss clean and marks ..... and the genius idea from daisy England of those magic sponges to tackle Matt marks, I think I have myself a decision! It really is a matter of personal choice. White gloss kitchens are by far one of our most popular ranges...and they have been for a very long time! I don't think it'll be a design that will disappear anytime soon. That said, matt finish has definitely been growing in popularity. It comes down to what you like the look of more. Gloss is probably a bit more 'showy' and will reflect the light around more. Matt is more subtle and softer.

The below image shows Cemento Spa suede - it certainly is easy to keep clean and fingerprints are kept to a minimum.

This Grey top also from Silestone is Alumino Nube (polished) You could say may take a little more looking after. But being polished, it really helps to throw the light back into the room due to having excellent reflective properties.

Both options will look great, maybe just consider how much natural light you do get into your kitchen.

Thanks very much everyone Haus12 It is the cemento one I’m looking at. Initially was suede then my kitchen firm said they have that in shop and it marks easily and looks dirty. I’m interested you say not. Have you got it or just fitted it? Thanks.

Hi Emma, We have installed the Cemento spa in several of our projects. Our clients like the suede as it does not need drying/buffing up once its been cleaned. My suggestion would be to borrow the small samples from your kitchen supplier (suede and polish) and use them as testers/coaster deliberate spillages etc - this will give you a better idea of usability and aid you in making the correct decision.

If you don't want to buff it to hide any marks a matt finish is required.

Personally I love matt (Jo) I have a light matt Silestone. I also recommend it to my clients.

I would rather go matt; you can always have under cabinet lights to make the working area brighter
