Front door replacement to a engineered core composite.

We are about to change our front door and the budget doesn't stretch to a solid hardwood one at £4k ( local joiner quote for a Sapele wood door) or a £4k + for an Accoya door!. I have filtered it down to a engineered wood core composite door by Endurance. I find very little in the way of customer reviews and want to know if anyone here has installed Endurance doors and how they are holding up.

No protection from the elements at all and I live in Manchester so it got wet... a lot! Had no issues whatsoever with expansion etc.

I don't know if I got lucky with that?!

I don't know what style you are looking for but I got my hardwood front door for a period property off eBay for £500. Worth a look if thats the style you are after! I got my joiner (my dad) to fit it and then I got it sprayed and fitted all the door furniture.

I have chosen this style, closest to the style of the one I love (in charcoal). We have vibrant red door at the moment and I wanted to keep that colour. We have been quote £1800 supplied and fitted for this door.

We went with Solidor: http://www.solidor.co.uk/our-doors Very happy with it, 48mm thick with a wooden core, feels nice and solid/secure compared the hideous UPVC door it replaced. Although it should be noted I hate UPVC.

Yes. Its quite normal for the front door to be a different colour to the windows. In fact if you take a look around your neighbourhood you'll probably notice that its the norm.

CD and Sonia - thanks for your lovely comments. I’m definitely not bold! The other houses in the estate are white rendered properties and no one else has the porch so not able to compare to see what things would look like but I’ll probably be demonised if i did anything strong! . The sage options look worth exploring. Didn’t even think of green hues - was so fixated on thinking of variations of the grey/ brown theme. I did think pale blue as you see a lot of designs that put brown and blue / turquoise together but my husband is totally against that option . I’ve been pouring over the RAL colour chart as I have to link it to those . RAL 7038 looks similar. The front of the house is south facing so in the day it is a bit lighter . Other ideas on that theme RAL 7030, RAL 7032 , RAL 7035, RAL 7038, RAL7044. My husband thinks RAL 7036, RAL 7004 which are definitely greyer. Could get very expensive with tester pots!

@debzip the opaque glass lets a lot of light in , and definitely more privacy. It does a great job, my hallway gets all the sun first thing in the morning and very bright. @Mary Hannon We have to change the garage door unfortunately as it’s a motorised one and because we’re converting part of the garage into a utility we need to get rid of the door unfortunately to gain that space where motor sits ☹️ The door is great condition but no choice I’m afraid

I found one similar to the charcoal one on eBay that you can get sprayed and the glazing changed if you wanted.

Funny is has the same name as me!

Oh thanks! I’ll look into it. So from looking at your front door, you don’t have a porch or canopy protecting your hardwood door, does that not cause issues with bowing, warping or sticking at all? I don’t have porch and get the sun all year long on the front.. it worries me about the exposure to elements and the side effects of these.

Sobi did you go for the Endurance door? I spoke to a local fitter for that door today and was advised they start at £2,200 supplied so quite a difference.

Hi Kel, I got a quote for £1800 for that red door supplied and fitted. On the Endurance website if you choose your door, and submit the query, they put you in touch with your nearest fitter, who should then give a fitted & supplied price. I haven't gotten the door so far as the red they supplied was kinda brown based, and I just couldn't settle! Masterdor, have also got similar alternatives in a colour of your choice for timber and composite door. I may opt of them. Check them out!

Thank you for replying Sobi. It was from seeing your post that I checked the Endurance website out and contacted the local fitter but they said their Endurance doors start at £2,200 - £2,300 which is quite a difference from the quote you received! I will look at your suggestion. I have had a quote and someone measure for a Rockdoor and quotes for Solidor but am just so confused as to which is the best to opt for. I have read negative reviews that recently Rockdoors adhesive is failing and the local fitter for the Endurance door advised that they used to fit Solidor but had issues with damp or something getting into the top of the doors, but that was two plus years ago so might have improved since then, maybe.
