whitewash without sanding?

I've just re-decorated my bedroom only to realize that I hate the color of the floorboards and now have my heart set on a whitewash. Of course the last thing I want to do having spent days decorating the rest of the room is cover it all in floorboard dust in sanding, so I was thinking I'd try a varnish stripper. The test strip wasn't great, still very streaky brush marks and nothing left if I wipe the wash away - but then maybe the eco varnish stripper is not up to the job of stripping old floor varnish? I have no idea how to go about this or whether thinning down an oil based paint with white spirit would work as a wash over pre-varnished floors? They were last varnished over 15 years ago. Any thoughts on a work around sanding would be welcome.
