True mint paint (UK)

I'm trying to find a true, mint paint in UK brands. In Dulux, I'm between Nordic Spa (too yellow) and Peppermint Beach 6 (too blue/dark). I thought it was Granada Green 6, but this is warmer than the cool pastel I had hoped for. I want the mint to coordinate with a steel grey floor and navy decorative accents.

It will very much depend on the light and the colours you have next to it. I had it in my bedroom and kitchen in my old house and it could vary significantly, even just by time of day. Must admit I miss it; it’s a beautiful colour that brightens dark rooms.

Try craig and rose soft green, that’s pretty close to that classic mint ice cream tone. Their porcelain blue can also veer between robin’s egg, soft slightly minty duck egg, or a more definite blue depending on light etc.

Thank you! It's so frustrating that the color veers because the Porcelain Blue swatch looks like what I'm going for, but I don't want it to be duck egg or Tiffany.

Mylands. You always regret your economies. I've repainted this kitchen 4X over the years, and last time was in Dulux which wore so poorly. Just custom mixed a new vibrant duck egg to paint my kitchen in marble matt walls, eggshell woodwork, and floor paint. Mylands matched impeccably. It was a dream of coverage, and looks spectacular. The quality of the pigment shows, looks the money, nothing like synthetic mediocre pigments in cheaper paint. It's a big improvement.

Dark wood doors - to paint or not to paint!!

Sorry to not agree with everyone else but I don't think these doors look stunning....they look like the stain is uneven and in my opinion so dark that the wood doesn't look like the natural product it once was. If you like the dark look then I would see if I could have them professionally finished and try to get an even polished wood look if you want to make the wood look more expensive. Alternatively strip back the wax/ stain so that the original wood graining is more authentic..... You will likely find that the architrave is different wood to the door so you might end up painting it so it matches something (likely the skirting boards). If this was my house I wouldn't hesitate to paint everything as in my opinion this is likely a softwood that was intended to have a painted finish. I would paint the architrave to match the skirtings and then I would paint the doors one or two shades darker.

Thank you so much for all this info. Does anyone happen to have the colour mix code for a valsper sample tin. Took the codes today and they said they can’t scale the size down enough for a sample pot and obviously I want to try the colour in our lighting first?

cavgirl is absolutely correct, context has a huge effect on how an individual perceives colour so you need to choose your mint with the other colours and lighting in mind.

Also, you cannot depend on choosing a colour using a computer screen unless the screen is calibrated to the same colour space as the item you are looking at. If you put two uncalibrated screens of different makes next to each other showing the same item, the shade will vary between the two.

Swatches are a better bet but only if they are made with the actual paint and not printed. Otherwise try sample pots to actually put the colours in place to see how they are when dry and with the same number of coats as you intend to apply when you do the job.

Hi Chris, thanks for the input. I have 20 paint samples on my wall from 3 different brands, and 10 more on order. I found a blue and a yellow for 2 other rooms with fewer than 10 sample pots: it's just this mint one that's a nightmare!

You are welcome, here http://www.britishstandardcolour.com/ is a link to the British Standard colour charts The BS4800 has the best selection of greens. These charts used to be available from most professional paint suppliers and all of them could be made up on the colourmix machines.

I am a little out of date on what is available in the UK as I haven't lived there for 18 years but the BS colours should be current.

Also, I discovered that the original inspiration was an American brand ("Lullaby Paints") in their color "Bengt". Any ideas of how I could find out the best UK match?

e-paint gives alternative colours and rates how well colours match, don't know if that helps?

I used a true mint named seafoam in my bedroom by Dulux. Valspar also do a lovely mint also called seafoam.

Thanks, all! I have chosen Valspar Cuddle Bug but lightened by 75%. It doesn't have the blue undertone that I wanted, and it's not as light as I intended, but it's a joyful, calming pastel green that will suit the room. I'll take photos when it's finished!

Check out former ecospaints (now Lakeland I think) they have an eau de nil kind of shade and also bengt

When putting paint samples on walls make sure that the background is white,otherwise a colour no matter how slight will taint your sample,also always put at least 2 coats on ,with so called Designer paints (F&B etc) at least 4 because they don’t cover,I have been doing using the above method every working week for over 40 years ,make sure your sample is at least 12 inches square to get a decent representation.

I agree that trying testers on a white wall is best to get a true colour, but the only way you will get the exact colour you want is to mix testers plus white paint. Make sure this is on a sheet of white artist paper. When you have the exact colour take it a shop where they will match the colour exactly. I did this with artists’ acrylics and took it to a Dulux mixer at Homebase. So many people have admired the green of my front door and it was the only way I could get the colour I wanted. Good luck!

I have very similar colour in one of my bedrooms, it's Dulux mint julep. Not sure if they still do it. It's lovely?

Some paint companies can mix you paint matched to a colour sample. And even better if you have a Pantone colour in mind. They input the Pantone number and hey presto you get paint that exact colour.
