If budget will stretch you could look at coloured glass. Most glaziers can put any colour on the back for you and template the area with sockets included then fit it all relatively quickly. Having a solid colour could help things look less fussy between the pattern of the wood grain and speckle of the worktop plus it really helps expand the space (as you look through it) and bounce the light around to brighten the space slightly.

It also depends what look would you like to achieve. I quite like the glass panel as you can get them in so many colours and they give a glossy finish to your kitchen. Just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who helped with ideas, and especially Jen for giving me a bit of inspiration and a light bulb moment! You are so right, holding your nerves whilst it’s going up is the hardest!! . I did opt for a splash back only and extended it so it goes a little under the cupboards. I’ve posted the finished pic below and hopefully going to accessorise with copper and wood to add warmth! A big hug and thanks to all x

Be brave, and go dark! Often people are scared to as they think it makes a room smaller but actually it can have the opposite effect. Blurring the finishing lines of the room can give the illusion of more space, and if the space isn't particularly bright anyway, embrace it!
