Driveway re designed

We need to replace the driveway and repair the retaining wall, we would like to take the chance to make the steps to our front patio and front door not so deep. We wonder about narrowing the garden behind the retaining wall, and making sweeping steps. It is North facing and sunny.

The area to the Left has just been finished. The mailbox area is being taken out with us putting the Mailbox on the other side. We are open to any advice and design suggestions, including plantings.

Hi Carole,

There is quite a few options as you are going to be re doing the driveway and repairing the retaining, what is on the other side of the fence?

One option would be to put in a set of steps with a dog leg in them allowing the steps to be bigger and feel more grand, this would also enable you to put some planting on both sides of the steps to soften the space down.

Ultimately a lot of this is going to be dictated by what is happening on the other side of that fence and the planting will need to tie in with the planting on the left hand side. I would recommend getting a local Landscape Designer to come and look at the space and address it as a whole to ensure a great and cohesive landscape is achieved.

Sweeping steps could work, because this will make the sweep of the driveway work as part of the visual welcome to your home. It will also give them a bit more presence. The current steps look quite small and abrupt, so do not invite you in.

The fence creates quite a barrier there. It shuts off the access to your home visually, and is very harsh. If you really need a fence there, can you make it at least partly permeable to at least have some sense of there being somewhere to go? A front entrance needs to lead you in and it presently leads to the drive then stops very suddenly.

A horizontally slatted fence could work with the current balcony balustrade and help to update it while keeping its character.

If the fence could be behind the steps and the front door, as well as being semi permeable, it would be even more welcoming.

Some plantings will also help to soften all the hard surfacing.

Hi. Is it a period property? I would add cornicing and then paint the cornicing and ceiling a darker shade than the walls to bring the ceiling down. I think if you did this you could get away with taller cabinets otherwise I think you're in danger of accentuating the ceiling height ( sorry to disagree on this and may well be wrong!) Go for either white units or a cool colour so grey, blue or green. I'd integrate the fridge freezer and maybe carry the units over the top of a cooker hood as pictured so it looks more streamlined. I'd do away with the serving hatch and have open shelves on this ŵall, Alternatively you could have the shelves either side of the cooker hood and units on the sink side as it may feel more spacious given the door position. I don't know if it's your thing but mirrored splashbacks would make the space feel bigger and also bounce more light. I'd also do away with the draining board so you have more worktop space if you have the space for a dishwasher. Do you use the microwave regularly?

The only way to get this right is to create a carefully scaled plan. One thing which would make the result a lot better is to make the 'roundabout' a raised bed so that you have some changes in level. That would also mean retaining some of the 'dig out' where you are extending the driveway. If you are extending the existing driveway by more than 5 square meters (which you will be), it needs to be a porous surface or have planning approval if it is not porous (in the U.K. that is). A lot of contractors either don't know this or don't care. Drainage is a a huge issue for everyone, overflowing toilets are not good for anyone.

Truly beautiful work but I feel that the two large pendants over the table where not necessary. Too many pendants now and the ceiling is not high enough for them. It would have been different with smaller shades possibly. An alternative would have been to use the pendant you have over the island over the table and used something like this over the island instead. This is the Long John brass spotlights fixture available on @hollowaysofludlow and you can find it in a variety of lengths from 1m to 2.6m depending on the length of your island. It would match the brassware on the cabinetry too.

If you are removing a strip of drive to introduce a hedge, you need to ensure that any sub -base under the driveway surface is also removed and a good depth of good quality soil installed. The other thing to be aware off is undermining the edge of the driveway, if you have a tarmac drive a new edging will need to be installed, the most cost effective edge would be a concrete edging strip but this would need properly installed and set in concrete to ensure stability. I would suggest Griselinia littoralis which is an evergreen shrub with very consistent fresh green foliage year round. It's also drought and pollution tolerant; this garden below is on the sea front and is regularly exposed to salt spray and it thrives! Hope this is helpful?

Thank you for your comments, it is along the lines of our thinking. Fence to the right is a boundary fence, with our neighbours 2 meters away. We will get someone in to look at the space, but wanting to get ideas and our heads in the right space so we can be clear about the challenges.... What you have both said is great Thank you.
