8 years agoI would definitely add wall lights, so when you don’t need a lot of light, you can just have those lights on. Also useful as additional lighting when you need it.
One of the other Houzzers added picture lights as wall lights in the kitchen (Resh, who is doing a Victorian renovation), which I thought was a great idea, but it’s not the minimalist look you’re going for.
I have these, Tolomeo by Artemide, but they aren’t very sleek

We have a couple of them (albeit in a hallway) and like them also because they emit light from bottom and top.
They come in different finishes and also in a longer version.

Comments (3)Yes that weird wall hanging . That can be removed and we are hoping it will create a more natural flow as currently makes that area much darker. Along itself obviously won’t bring in more natural light but optically might make the place brighter as won’t be there an object . Comments (3)Hi Ruth, I think both ideas could work. Important is to have those lights on a separate switch so you can change the mood in your kitchen. It is sometimes nice in the evening not to switch the main light on. I would also consider instead of spreading this 4 pendant lights evenly, do just a cluster of 3 or 4 in the corner where you will make most use of your worktop. There is also a way to have a pendant light above your island. It is a battery operated rechargeable wireless pendant light. Comments (7)Visualising your colour scheme, I would choose a soft white tile, perhaps Zellige as mentioned above— these tiles are different variations of the same colour . There is a trend at the moment for using quartz continuing up the wall, whilst this can work well, if you wish to avoid that blocky look of a solid slab, tiles can provide a softer finish. In terms of maintenance, if you have an induction hob there will be very little splashing of foodstuffs as this is a gentle way to cook. However, if you are cooking over a flame, I would probably not opt for tiles as there can be a lot of foodstuffs splashing back behind hob. You could have a shelf or shelves with lighting underneath too. That doesn't look too 'kitcheny', especially if you put decorative, non kitcheny items on them.

- 8 years agoThanks for all the suggestions. We’ve been recommended the use of LED down lights that can be angled slightly to bounce light of the wall and illuminate the worktops below. Like these
