A box window that opens?

In our new extension we've designed a big box-window seat. Kind of like this:

I'm really drawn to the idea of laying across this seat sunbathing with the window open, but I'm not sure what my options are with openers.

Is there some kind of window that opens like a giant door and locks into place?

I spoke to someone today and they suggested making it like a sliding door, but that would mean I'd have to have a line down the middle.

Ah we are doing something similar and have the same dilemma.

After discussions with our architect and numerous image searches I've come to the conclusion that you can either have the frameless look as per your pic (but it will be fixed shut) or an opening window, but then more of the window seat structure needs to be solid, otherwise you end up with too many frames and it starts looking like a greenhouse.

As regards the opening window, a pivot window doesn't work as too much gets in the way of the seat. We don't want bifold or sliding due to the line.

We are going for a framed window looking out to the garden which hinges down one side - the frame won't be super thin but I will live with that. Fixed glass on one side of the seat. Solid down the other side (where the hinge is) and solid roof.

Very jealous! Would have loved one of these in our house but no budget

They could possibly do it as a pivot door. So it swings from the centre out but then that might get in your way if you’re lying down Humm.

Bifold will mean having a bar in the centre (although there is a company who make ‘frameless bifold doors’ with such a thin metal frame it’s barely noticeable) and that could work.

French windows again would open out but have a bar in the centre.

Might be someone who could do them as a side hinged window but the frame might need to be thick to take the weight. It shouldn’t be an issue though as all the frame would be around the window then and not internally.

Also found this online (image) for a hydraulic window but I imagine that would be super super expensive

Just to clarify, I’d definitely go for full length in a traditional bay. However this type of bay has right angles (the “box” and the return) which are really difficult for opening and closing the curtains. Also the furniture and the deep cill make it even more awkward. That’s why in this case I’d do working blinds (close to the windows and down to the cill) with the lovely full length curtains just to dress it.

My handyman could build that in an instant. He’s built all sorts of garden stuff from planters to sheds. Costs I’m not so sure - he normally charges about £89 for a half a days work, if that’s any help? Obviously materials would be extra.

@minnie101 Thank you - I’ll take a look. All the plants in the picture have died - that was when we moved in and I’ve been ill for 2 years with long covid (I’m the gardener) so they’re bare now. It’s one in a long list of things to do but one I can start from a horizontal position!

Have you got any wall to the left of yours ( if orientated like this image) you could slide the window against the outside face of the wall, but your corner junctions will need to be a lot chinkier than this image, then.
