Kitchen/dining layout ideas

We are about to renovate our kitchen and would like some help with some layout ideas.

I have uploaded a floor plan (not the best-sorry) which shows the current kitchen layout. In our view the current design is fairly basic and does not utilise the space efficiently.

At this stage we are not considering extending to the side or back (unless persuaded otherwise). In an ideal world we would have a kitchen/dining space with a small living area and a separate utility. But that’s a big ask so we will need to forgo the utility..

Does anyone have any idea on layout? We would also like to change the feel of the kitchen by replacing the uPVC garden doors with multiple French doors/crittal or perhaps even replacing the windows (on the right hand side in the area that sticks out) with doors. I am not a fan of bifolds personally.

Finally, if we were to extend, would anyone suggest a part extension in some sort of L shape or would this ruin the flow of the garden space? Any side extension wouldn't be much more than 1-1.5m across as we don't want to lose the side access. All suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance.

Hi, it's really hard to read the dimensions of the kitchen. It would also be useful to know how wide it is in the various areas. Could you post photos of the space? It's good to see where windows are and to get a feel for the room. How wide is the wall on the left of the entrance door?

Wondering whether it would be a good idea to move the kitchen forward, to the wider end of the room.

Holly, not a bad dialema and what great spaces you have to play with! There are so many options for you here. I have worked on these type of properties for over 9 years and I always provide the same advice to a client. You will need to consider how you want to use the space/the environment that you want to create in order to determine where you will place the furniture. Key elements such as how you intend to travel through the property, what is practical for you, how your family spend their time at home etc. will all dictate the interior configuration. For example, some of my clients would look to create a formal reception room at the front of the property, introducing a door from the hallway. They would then utilise the second reception room as a play/TV area, library, piano space or even insert the kitchen within this zone and create a very large open plan dining/entertainment space (large sofa/TV area) at the rear, directly connected to the garden. As you can see there are so many points to consider. Have you thought about appointing a team to assist you with the space planning/visualising how it could look?

I have a similar layout on a project I did recently, take a look at my page with Rogers-Bexhill there is a large L-Shape with Island and the door is situated in a similar position. I made two different layouts of your house. Hope it may inspire. Left: First floor similar to yours, but some tweaks on the wardrobe and ensuite area, to make better use of the space (in my opinion). Ensuite is 170cm wide, so either walk-in shower or bath tub would fit. Hinged or pocket door, I'm not set on a type. Created a landing cupboard for towels and such. Utility could be a bit wider, as 160cm is tight. Hallway has a shelf or shallow shoe cabinet next to the front door, more place to stand and welcome people. Coats with bench can go a bit further in. Lounge rotated as interior psychology makes us feel more at ease when we can see who's coming in. Kitchen in C shape, nice looking hutch opposite, tall units in the middle of the room, bench with storage (under and above) top right with table. And an extra sofa. Right: First floor completely different. Extension has two smaller bedrooms and new bathroom. Two bedrooms on the right turned into master suite, bathroom wall moved over to the right. Again added a landing cupboard. Kitchen diner with an island looking into the room (though the whole thing could be rotated ccw if you don't want the sink to go under the window), round table with very comfy chairs, so a sofa is not required. I think it’s personal preference re location of table, I’d prefer the kitchen near the light and garden. Having said that, I think you have enough space to have the table adjacent to the island leaving 120cm corridors between base units and island, island and table etc. This would also allow a longer run of kitchen units. You don’t mention what type and how many ovens you want, separate fridge and freezer, larder etc Just thinking if you did have the kitchen alongside the island (assuming the window sizes aren’t set in stone) you could leave some space by the fire for a couple of armchairs with maybe a built in bar and bookcase in the alcoves There’s a concept planner on here whom works remotely (OnePlan), it might be worth having a chat with her If possible I’d also hold off finalising rooflight positions until the whole room plan has been done

Morning Min!

As Carolina said above, exact dimensions and some current photos would be great as with interior design, we do have to consider the current feeds and supplies in the room to influence design. However, I've sketched an idea below - nothing is to scale, though - but would need to check this against your dimensions to advise on if you would have enough space... :)

As you can see, if the space doesn't allow, it could be too cramped around the seating area :)

I have no idea if it would all fit, but I'd look into replacing your french doors with a large window. Move the doors to the right. Have a window sit in the bay window. A dining table may also fit.
