And I really love the painting, but I wonder if it will be better over the sofa? It feels a little too big over the fireplace. Or maybe it feels different in real life and it's just the photo that emphasises it

Carolina are you human? The way you help us minions on Houzz is just fantastic. The way you share your ideas and talent and give us amazing mock ups help us envisage design ideas. Jen I love all those chairs but not keen on the burgundy one and the fern fabric is beautiful. That room is going to look amazing!

OK an update. I've swapped the mirror and picture. What do you think. The shelves still need painting and decluttering but I'm so pleased we did them. The curtains I wasn't sure about but swapping the mirror next to them has really helped. In the future we will replace the desk and chandelier. I'm still undecided about the armchair. Considering hunter. Do you think the yellow accents work with the metallics?

The doors were I think the the first thing that made me fall in love with the house and move here :) The hallway is much more my 'style' (it does have some rotten floor boards unfortunately so a work in progress) but I really wanted to be brave and go dark in this room. The furniture is all a bit of a mish mash from different rooms in previous houses so I'm still working out what will stay and what will be moved. I agree the mirror and yellow vases aren't totally right for the room but currently they have no where else to go! The sofa is the main thing that needs to stay, so I will try and phase other things out gradually (and the tools/toolstation bag a little sooner!). Life is so hectic at the moment that everything seems to take weeks. I'll post a proper after photo when it's all finished though- thanks for all the advice

Thanks I'll check out Dunelm. Unfortunately everyone apart from me seems to hate cushions in this house for some strange reason! I will probably compromise in this room, so I can go cushion mad in the living room and master bedroom ;)

It's nice to hear you like the mirror too. I think in the photos the sofa looks more grey than it really is, and the mirror more bronze. However I'm getting a bit stressed by the mix of so many strong/competing colours!

If everything was too colour matched it can look a bit flat and uninteresting. So sorry that no one else wants cushions, they really do finish a room. Great cheap way to change the look of a room with little outlay, Here‘s an inspo photo, but yes, it is rather colourful!

I know. I have 2 small cushions on the sofa, but every time I go in they are on the floor grrr!

Maybe it's how it looks in the photo, but I hope you don't mind me saying this, the large picture looks a little odd to me. Sort of confusing to see another window, with curtains, that appears out of proportion.

It's hard to explain what it is and I'm sure it looks better in the flesh, but it seems to distract from the beauty of the room.

I don't mid at all. The room definitely feels a bit 'confused' when I walk in still! There's a lot going on, and if I had planned it from scratch I would have made different choices. It's a bit frustrating with the painting, as colour wise I'm happy. I also like the scale of it (although you aren't the first to comment on this). Another point to consider thanks

I've been wandering around the room all evening! I *think* that if I go for the green (Hunter or Kingfisher) chair as per Carolina's second mock up the painting works 0k?? Can I have some more honest opinions and don't worry about offending me! I probably wouldn't move it straight away, but it would be good to have something to aim towards. If you think it needs replacing- what with? I'm not a fan of bare walls as you can probably tell ;) I will rehome the yellow vases btw

I like the painting. I like its scale. I like the fact it gives a feeling of airy-ness (surely, that's not a word...) but I think it's in the wrong place.

Not so much because it's the 'wrong' style or period but rather because the subject matter is open doors to the outside, it appears to change the proportions of the room.

Trompe l'oeil, but In a not so good way.
