Please HELP! Decorating the Living Room...
Comments (20)Thank you everyone for your great ideas! Actually, the room is not as dark as you think - the window is east facing, and we do get a good deal of sunshine through it... I think the pictures don't do the room justice. I do agree, dark furniture does make it seem very dull though. OK, here is what I am thinking at the moment... Unfortunately, the sofa does not fit quite right againt the opposite wall, neither does the love seat by the window (I've measured everything up and the sofas are of the wrong sizes). I'd like to replace the love seat with a couple of chairs (as the love seat is quite chunky, and does dominate the room as you walk in), but I can't justify spending the money on that just yet :( I am planning to buy a bigger rug (thank you for the suggestion, ren2513), I do love the white/cream as we have now, but will go for something with a bit more colour through it, and definitely replace the coffee table with a bright ottoman (thinking something along these lines at the moment http://www.marksandspencer.com/oval-button-footstool/p/p22344378001 colour Measham,Ochre)... And I'd like to move the existing rug behind the love seat. I'd also like to either match the wall paper or a few pictures on the wall to the ottoman (colour-wise) for some continuation. The ceiling lamp shade will be replaced with something a bit more original (this was fitted in a rush when we moved in, with no thought behind it!) All the speakers will go, as I don't think they look right in the room, and will be replaced with more descrete ones :) We are keen to replace the TV stand with Skovby TV unit and a display cabinet (in white oak), so a similar idea to what was suggested by Sauve :) thank you! Haven't decided on the 'behind the love seat' arrangement just yet. Thanks again for the suggestions everyone :)...See MoreLiving room alcoves and fireplace
Comments (1)It's a lovely room. I think I would just remove the shelves and add a large square piece of art over the fire so that becomes more of a focal point. I had been thinking that you could paint all the alcoves (including tv) in F&B pelt. It would look lovely against the chaise. You could then add contemporary art over the fire with a splash of deep purple or mustard or both. However the ceiling beam is throwing me as I would do that white so it becomes part of the ceiling and without seeing the LHS of the room it may cut that side off. It could work though (?!). It's obviously a very dark colour but you may like it as you want a cosy feel. I might also try moving the chaise away from the cabinet a few inches and angle it a little towards the sofa?...See MoreHelp with HUGE living room dilemma please!
Comments (42)I think that the fire place is beautiful as it is and does not need any make up!! The sideboard on the right is no so big at all and if painted with different colour than grey and distressed could become a much lighter piece with its own character. I would take the top off the left one and again shabby chick it, filling the doors with ornaments to make it more interesting. It is amazing what a transformation you can achieve with a bit of chalk paint! I am using chalk paint for my oversized wooden clocks and it can give an amazing look to a piece for wood: Giant Shabby Chic Wooden Wall Clock Contemporary Large Wooden Wall Clock Rustic Oversized Handmade Wall Clock Give it try before you get rid of them:) Anna...See Moresomeone please help I'm lost on what to do with this room
Comments (14)Why don't you start putting together an ideabook on houzz, save all the pictures you like and annotate what in particular you like about each one as it will help you (and others) in terms of decor and then you can make a design that you work towards over time. If you're getting rid of the fire then I would probably hang the tv on the chimney breast to save space. There are lots of ways to make sure it doesn't become the focal point. As a short term solution though will the tv fit on the wooden stand in the alcove? Will the velvet sofa also fit in room 1? If so, what way does the room face in terms of paint colour? Longer term maybe you could build out the cupboard and chimney slightly so as to recess the tv and cover the pipes? For room 2 personally I'd use this for dining. Can you have a banquette seat and pedestal table on the wall where the buggy is? Is there room for your daughters big toys to go elsewhere or not? I'm just wondering if you could use this as combined dining and play? (You also get a comfier seat with the banquette as presumably she's not old enough to play on her own). Rugs, lamps, textures, plants etc will all make it feel more homely. Maybe if you give an initial budget for stage 1 people can give ideas?...See MoreSonia
