Dining table etiquette: do you use your mobile phone while dining?

We've seen a lot of videos and articles in which people using mobiles phones while dining with friends are often criticised. How do you feel about this?

Do you use your mobile phone when out for dinner or even at home?

I think it's the epitome of bad manners.

Unless the communication is absolutely vital or essential - a doctor on call for instance or a crisis at home, I think it's a total no-no to even have it switched on, whilst eating, particularly out to dinner or in company.

Absolutely not !! We have a total ban on mobile phones around our dinner table when we are eating, and only when we're finished and I say that we can 'get down' do the kids then run into the sitting room and see if they've missed anything in the 20 minutes that they've not had some device stuck to their faces. Same goes for the TV as well. We do have the radio on, but in today's busy lifestyle it's the very few times that we can actually all sit down together and talk about what's been going on.

Hello Newton81, You're not alone... There are few of us who can afford what we really want .. So.. Given that you understand that replica means just that.. You are getting more or less what you pay for.. things can still be made well but not carry the "name" but it's true... Some replicas or copies are not made that well.. So it's wise to look around.. The other thing to consider too is that things are often priced because of the "name" So.. It's good to really look carefully and think on exactly what it is you're spending for.... Useful chair or the name! (yes beauty and design..) Sometimes a copy is as good as the real thing.. and if it means having more in the pocket, then even better... Who said a rolex had to be real! It's cool 2 b a copy! : ) ) Clients come with all manner of ideals and budgets.. big and small.. So finding ways to achieve the look they want at the price the wallet can afford is something that has to be considered.. I have picked 2 with an addition of an armchair.. I think it's nice to have an armchair for the heads of the table.. but maybe you don't like that idea... see the link below.. It's not Vitra! but... See what you think... Look at the returns policy and materials.. then decide which way you want to go.. ask about damages etc and weigh up the cost of a copy vs the real deal... My big love is the Cherner chair... Hi, thank you all for your input. I'm just going with the white Eiffel ones for now as all the suggestions are frying my brain and I need to get the chair ASAP, lol. It will buy me some time while I renovate the other ones and I'm sure someone will always want to buy them off me afterwards

Units/parallel island/dining table - how much width do you need?

Ok, so I have attached a few pics that I have created on the homebyme website. Pics show the floorplan and a possible room layout. This is to be a kitchen/diner. The space is currently there, it just is 2 separate rooms at the moment and we will be removing walls to create this space. Top wall in pic is 5m, of which will be 3.6 m sliding doors to garden. We originally had island parallel to the run of units along the left side wall. We have now rotated so it is perpendicular to the run of units. Behind island is staircase, underneath which will be fully built in, units to include fridge freezer and larder. The distance I have allowed between the back of the island and the understairs storage is 1.2m, would this be enough should there be someone sitting at a stool, and would I still be able to open a cupboard behind? Any suggestions more than welcome! The left side wall is 4.55m til the doorway, this run of units needs to include sink and cooker and at the end I have put in the pic full height tall unit to hold washing machine and boiler. I would like a bit of symmetry with that run of units, but just been playing about with it tonight! Could this work? Thanks for looking!

Our current chairs are from made.com and the round table from ikea, both all purchased as a temporary solution while we figure out our needs and find the right design. My budget is quite wide subject to the products being the perfect fit :) I really like Carl Hansen products but the downside with their tables is that the extension leaves need to be stored separately. We are open to buying new chairs and complementing them with the ones we have.

I don't really see it as much of an issue. If I'm sat at the dinner table or out for dinner and someone gets their phone out to text or look at something I don't really care. Only have an issue with it if I'm having a conversation with someone and then they get their phone out while you're talking to them but that could happen anywhere. Other than that do what you want imo.

My kids are 17 and 19 now and they wouldn’t dream of using phones at the dining table. And actually it might have been that both me and their father wouldn’t have it but now I think they’ve found ways of managing the constant notifications on their phones and ignore it. I don’t fully understand since Houzz is the only social type app I have and really I’m a Luddite but I wonder if the tide turning?

It’s the epitome in bad manners and I hate it. I also no longer do social media, apart from Houzz, and I feel liberated! It’s so unimportant. Also removed all notifications apart from text - all those blinkin’ noises drove me up the wall!
