Lounge paint advice needed!
Our lounge was last decorated in 2005 so is in dire need of redecoration and advice is needed in respect of paint colours / tones etc. I have taken some photos from various angles to give you an idea of its current state -
The sofas are staying for now
The rug is going
The fireplace is currently covered with a piece of wood to stop 2 kittens climbing up the chimney!
The main colour in there at the moment is F&B String except for either side of the fireplace
Would also like to change the wall & ceiling lights - ceiling is quite low
Vertical blinds must be replaced - ny ideas please?
The room gets lots of sun from about 3pm onwards
I already have lots of samples from hallway redecoration and kitchen extension
I'm tempted to go more neutral although husband disagrees ! Thankyou

Comments (11)Hello Melissa, Oooh Lovely! Lucky you! For colours I'd suggest chalky matt for walls. Either keeping it light with stone and light greys... OR going to darks......For the ceiling Whitening by Little Greene works beautifully... Then pick out all the wood work - This can either be light or it can be dark and contrasting to compliment the wall colours.. Do the section between picture rail and cornice the same as the ceiling and then do a flat eggshell on the woodwork.. I actually mix my own paint to get a flat chalky finish here too on all my woodwork. I have not done the floor like this as it has quite a lot of traffic..and I have moved things round.. Hope you have floorboards underneath.. Would you consider painting these too?... Works beautifully actually and also darker colours to compliment the walls... You could also paint the doors a really fabulous chalky charcoal and add some brassy and glass handles.. Is there a fireplace? Would be lovely to get a look at that too... Comments (3)Hi @picasso28, Choosing the right paint for a north-facing room is potentially a tricky minefield of guess work! The problem with northern light is that it tends to be cooler and harsher and it often brings out the cooler tones within a colour. If you're going to opt for an off-white, avoid anything with a green or grey base. Yellow based colours such as Farrow & Ball White Tie, New White or even something as vibrant as Yellow Ground can help to bounce as much light around the room as possible. You can also help by hanging a mirror to further reflect the light you do have in place. Alternatively, you could go the other direction and embrace the darkness to create a dramatic and cocooning interior. Strong colours like Brinjal, Railings or Down Pipe can create a sense of intimacy in a dark space. We recommend ordering some sample pots in the colours you think might work and trying them on different walls in different parts of the room. For a long narrow room (relatively speaking as it isn't narrow!), you could paint the 2 short walls the dark colour as this will "correct" the room's proportions rather than paint the long wall as it will accentuate the length. Alternatively you'd normally paint the fireplace wall to highlight the feature. I think as you've got doors it should break it up a bit but I'd do the doors in the same colour. I would probably go for something a bit richer than pitch blue, like Hague blue. I know whose room that is you've pictured in the 2nd pic so will try and find the colour but am sure it was a valspar paint! You could also try downpipe which works well in a north facing room. I'd probably put these with warm whites/neutrals rather than grey. Elephants breath can work really well in a north facing room but can also just look grey and agree with littlesongs comments! You could also go dark on all walls and layer the lighting, add mirrors etc. Or if you decide light then people can make colour suggestions for that :)...See More

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoI think the sofa's are dating the room, so along with Carolina's great blue walls i'd go for a sofa cover and re-do the footstool. Tone down some of the pine by painting it to match. Change the rug,
My daughter recently bought covers from Amazon sofa cover, and was really impressed with the quality, She then treated herself to a co-ordinating armchair, thus saving a fortune.

5 years agoI painted the hallway Dulux Cotton Bloom and have 5 litres over But it might be too light. I also like F&B inchyra blue.
