BATHROOM DESIGN - TILES!
Hey Houzzers! Would love to see what you think of these plans!
I want to mix up marble tiles and wood effect ones for our bathroom renovation. Here's the before!
On one side we will box the wall hang toilet all the way to the top with wood effect porcelain tiles.
The wall behind the sink is half done in alsace Honed Marble 15x7.5cm (Mandarin Stone), then a pencil rail and then Alsace Honed Marble herringbone mosaic. Although they don't look it in the photos, they are the same colour marble tiles, more white than grey.
On the other side of the room we have a bath with shower and black taps, also a frameless bath screen with black hinges.
Here's the dilemma:
Option A
I was thinking of replicating the wood effect tiling on the left hand side wall, where the shower head will be placed, to create a flow in the room with the wood effect.
Option B is to only tile with marble tiles around the bath.
The photos are not great as I am not using SKETCH or anything so to help you:
a) the floor tiles and the wall behind the bath and the wall to the right of the bath towards the window are meant to be the same (ALSACE HONED MARBLE, Mandarin Stone 30x60cm);
b) the bath will be boxed in using Alsace honed marble 15x7.5cm;
c) the wall behind the sink is half done in alsace Honed Marble 15x7.5cm, then a pencil rail and then Alsace Honed Marble herringbone mosaic.
d) Finally the wood effect tiles are maple effect porcelain tiles also from Mandarin Stone.
Which Option do you prefer, OPTION A (both sides of room with wood effect tiles) or OPTION B (only marble around the bath)?

Comments (30)Hi, if you did that, the box would be a very prominent feature and unless the box was the same width as the window sill you would have one surface slightly wider than the other which would look unbalanced so ideally I would leave around 100mm - 150mm between the two surfaces as in the photo. That said, it does depend on the height of the window sill from the floor. These details can be difficult to call which is why we use software and get a 3D visualisation. In answer to your second question, yes you could use chrome or satin nickel finish strip or a glass pencil tile to finishes the top of a tile very nicely and avoid that awkward edge created with a ceramic tile. You could use the strip on its own or with a mosaic of some sort - the pink and grey scheme was an Art Deco style set we did for a bathroom showroom. PRO7 years agoHi - I think option B looks the best from the pictures you have provided and how you have described it. There are a couple of design factors you should take into consideration though; a full marble bathroom is going to be a lot more colder than a bathroom with elements of wood, as wood is a warmer material. So just imagine walking on cold marble flooring in the winter, you may not be used to that. Secondly, try to keep your design simple to create a bigger impact and let the marble give your bathroom the wow factor.
You could still add wood in other areas like the sink vanity unit:
Also I would stick to two materials (marble and tiles) and one paint colour. Take a look at this bathroom and how well it works. Marble around your shower will look stunning!

@rachelmidlands - current position of radiator, omg indeed. We can credit the previous owners with this :D.
The problem with the 'strip down the shower' is that this specific area is just 80cm big. We would have to cut the wood effect tiles to half (they are 800x200) to leave a decent size for the strip (40cm) and then also cut the marble tiles twice (20cm tile to the left and 20cm to the right of the strip). The wastage and extra hours for cutting that would add to the cost for this are not really worth it in my mind.
Here's a picture of the tiles we're going for. This is what the floor and the opposite wall (behind the sink) will look like exactly.
I do not plan to tile the wall to the right of the sink or the wall to the left of the toilet.

No wood selving or anything that will 'cheapen' the whole look. We want it streamlined, slick, minimalist. There is a big vanity we are using to keep everything hidden. Here are all the products we are using.

7 years agoWhere will you keep the shampoo and stuff like that? Any chance of a built in shelf somewhere? Maybe even like this on the back wall? In which case I'd go for a marble shower wall.
