Kitchen Dilemma

I have a kitchen dilemma. My kitchen is glossy light grey and I am not sure what colour worktop I should go for. Also I am unsure about whether to go with a white marble pattern for the floor tiles or for a plain white tile. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'd go for white marble look tiles. It would be more forgiving on little spills and drops.
But I personally would never do a white floor in a kitchen. Too much maintenance to keep it looking perfect and stained grout can be a issue depending on the colour.
I'd do the whites on the counter and a timber look on the floor.
Alternatively, keep the floor white and add a timber counter to warm up the room.

I’d also go for white worktops (possibly with marble effect or some grey flecks) & a wood effect floor to warm it up.

Hi katie. I think the biggest problem is the worktop and splashback/tiles but dear to replace. I know your dad likes the green ceiling but I personally think it's encroaching on the space making the room feel a little smaller and darker. Having it white or in a paler colour than the walls expands the space. Removing items from the windowsill that block light would help and a bit of a declutter. You could try painting both the units and walls white. If you don't want white and white (but look at images with dark worktops) then try a light colour with white. Adding cheap lighting under and over caninets etc will also help as will reflective surfaces and accessories but you already have the SS sink and chrome handles.. Ps if they are tiles and not a splashback then you can paint them

We were confronted with similar limitations on a project last year. We achieved a layout which I believe optimises the space available. The distance between the kitchen units was 85-90cm. Please see project here. I believe the key area to address with a small kitchen are: storage - favour drawers opposed to doors and explore which internal storage solutions suit your needs lighting - ensure all areas of the kitchen are well-lit worksurface - provide as large an area as possible; induction hobs and undercount sinks with integrated drainer grooves help handleless door/drawer fronts - if a modern kitchen, I'd suggest going for handleless to avoid catching plinth - repeat the same flooring material as plinth to give the illusion that the base units are floating gaps - avoid; build in units wherever possible - cleaning within the tight space will otherwise be cumbersome

I would think about how to make best use of earthy materials, I'm not convinced the strong blue is the right thing. Is it possible to post lots of picture that show different views of the room? I agree about pale worktops, essential for reflecting light. The other thing to consider is that the floor tiles are quite a strong colour and therefore I wouldn't put too strong a blue in there, rather a duller dark blue/black or softer warm greys.The bottom image with warm greys and small amounts of dark blue/black is lovely. I like Sonia's images, they feel right for the materials you are working with. Here are some more.

Dear Nimmy, Exciting project. I think keeping the utility as it is and putting the pantry in the thin part of the kitchen which you walk through to access the utility is the way forwards. Using that area as a main part of the kitchen for cooking is a very lonely place, even if you have opened up the space. It will then mean that because all your storage is taken care of, you don't need an enormous kitchen in the kitchen/diner, leaving plenty of space for a family kitchen table. What style is the kitchen and the rest of the house. What flooring do you have near to the kitchen...............I ask as i'm a big fan of all downstairs flooring matching where practical.

If you want light an airy, go with the whites............if you want warmth so that it doesn't look too stark go with some wood.

If you go with whites, you can also warm up with the wall colour or coloured splash back.

It really depends on what you like to start with.
