Living room design help please
Comments (25)Hi we have oyster split face tiles in our downstairs loo on one wall. We chose to go plain on the others as it’s such a feature. Here’s a pic - i’m sharing less due to colour but because if you zoom in, you can see the finish on our tiles is really quite different. I didn’t think they needed grouting as they are meant to stick out at irregular angles, but we don’t have gaps like yours so maybe they do. I do know our builder said they were a total nightmare to put up!...See MoreShould we start wall tiles again?
Comments (13)I wouldn't bother as I would imagine a lot of it will be covered up by the loo etc. However i do sympathise, we (I say we, I hid upstairs and the OH did the deed) had a very awkward conversation and a very mardy and petulant tiler once, when we had our downstairs cloak room done. In a room which was under 1 m wide he had laid the floor tiles which were 40 x 40cms in a way that was easier for him because he had less cuts to make (on porcelain tiles), but it meant that there was an off centre grout line down the centre of the room (and loo) when he should have laid a full time down the middle and cut tiles to fit each side. He also didn't have a central grout line or full tile at the door threshold either. We made him do it again, under much protest and mumbling on his part. But we needed it done quickly for a planned house warming party we were having, so we just carried on with him. I bitterly regret allowing him to carry on and despite my constant desire to get them redone every time I go in there, we've not yet managed to find a combination of the money, the time or the right person to re-do it. Incidentally, the whole downstairs cloakroom project taught me a valuable lesson, which I've always remembered and seems to hold true every time. There's usually a good reason why a trades person is available at short notice for a project, for a relatively comparatively cheap price..........it's usually because they're not very good....See MoreGrouting advice
Comments (29)Thanks Patrina. I thought I’d update on what we did with the grout in the end and show you the (nearly) finished product. We did dark (anthracite) grout on the black tiles and the wood tiles and mid grey grout which matched the grey tiles. I’m really pleased with the result and I think my husband has done a fantastic job of the tiling- it’s been a real labour of love....See MoreTo upstand or not to upstand...
Comments (12)I just have upstand in our current kitchen, and I’ve found that it generally has a slightly unfinished feeling, plus the wall paint doesn’t wipe down all that well (perhaps because the walls are quite uneven). @ellie why do you say that? I’ve never really considered that there are tiles which should only be used in one of the other. The picture shows a bathroom but the description on the mandarin stone website mentions kitchen in the usage list....See MoreAnthony Maguire
