I would put the door on the floor below so you maximise the space in this room. It will give better illusion of space as you won't have a partition wall where the current balustrade is. Also you may want to consider not having a window in the en suite and keeping the maximum levels of nature daylight into the room. It would help to have a few more details. Who would be living here, budget etc. If it is for 2 professional sharers, I wonder if you could squeeze an ensuite into each reception room to make 2 good size bedrooms. I'd then open up the kitchen and hall (removing the bathroom, and make a small kitchen living area. If it is for you, and you need a master plus occasional or child's bedroom I would install kitchen units onto the back wall of the reception room, make the existing kitchen a bedroom and add a second bathroom/utility/storage room (depending on priorities) in the hall way gap as you planned. All plumbing, permissions. dependent etc...

I agree that voile rollers will give you privacy and still look modern, and Romans on top will give you blackout and bring colour to the room. We got voile rollers at the front as we are overlooked and they are brilliant.

In answer to your question, this is somewhere we're planning on staying 'for life' so with a toddler and another one planned in the very near future we just thought it would be more practical to end-up with a large master with ensuite, good sized second bedroom and two smaller doubles - one each for the children and a guest room. I know it all boils down to individual circumstances, hence the above but it's otherwise a large property (nearly 2000 sq ft) in a lovely plot and area so the only real compromise seems the missing fourth bedroom.
