So are you asking what people store in their drawers?

I have an 800mm wide drawer pack under my hob. Fabulous size. Top drawer is cutlery. Middle drawer is all saucepans and lids. Bottom drawer is oven gloves, cake tins, some baking tins (have other baking tins and meat tins elsewhere too) and cake racks etc. Two 150 mm pull outs each side of it.

Opposite this on the other side of the island are 4 pan drawers in 2 sets of 2 over each other. The top pan drawers have secret drawers inside so there is no waste of space. Now what’s in them? What isn’t? All junk and clutter that I regularly use.

Drawers are easier to access and see what’s inside them as opposed to a base unit.

As an alternative you could always look at a larder unit with a chrome swing out. They store heaps of stuff and because it swings out you can easily see what’s in there.

When we planned our new kitchen we planned it with only drawers (no shelves) in the base units (our wall units are glass fronted and only 40cm high so there's just a single glass shelf in those).

We keep all of our cups, glasses and plates in the drawers - so much easier than trying to reach to the back of a cupboard. In the larder cupboard we have drawers or pull out baskets behind doors, for all food stuffs. Needless to say we've got big pan drawers under the hob.

Even under the sink, behind the door, we have one drawer located at the bottom of the cabinet, which is brilliant because you don't have to delve and reach into always gloomy and uninviting area under the sink for stuff, you can see it all at a glance by pulling the drawer out.

It makes so much sense and makes life so much easier.

We went for drawers in our French home and find them so much more accessible than cupboards. Also, you never "lose" stuff at the back, like I do with cupboards.

You can have drawers within drawers, to give a clean, uniform look of just two doors deep all round, whilst having the convenience of shallow drawers for smaller items.

Plan carefully about what you want to store and where that needs to be relative to your oven, hob, sink, etc.

The drawer sliders are very strong, so wide drawers are not a problem.

Under the sink we have a deep drawer that holds waste bins, this is opened with a foot pedal! Genius when you have messy hands from cleaning and filleting fish! (or any other food prep)

Don't bother with plate dividers in the drawers, the plates sit in stacks and do not move about. Dividers just waste your space. We kept a couple of cupboards for tall things such as cereal boxes.

The attached photo is pre tiling & decorating and I don't have any showing drawer interiors. Sadly we will not be back there until late March.

We love the drawers kitchen in France so much that we will be renewing our UK kitchen to all drawers soon.

OOH Kitchen drawers, if you ask me, they go everywhere remotely possible! What I did was make a list of all the things I keep in the kitchen. The dog and cat drawer, the din drawer, the cooking utensils, the spices, the pans, plates, baking accessories, the baking bulk items.... etc I have the plates, bowls, pans, everything I can in drawers. The one thing I did wrong initially was to purchase all standard drawer heights, and soon changed 2 standard drawers to slim ones for cutlery, utensils etc. I even ended up buying pull out baskets for some cupboards.

Make your list

I have mostly drawers, so much easier to access. I have all plates and bowls in one, cutlery in another, saucepans and mixing bowls in another. We do have an “odds and sods” drawer which houses cling film, foil, graters and all sorts. Kirstie Allsop is a great fan of drawer units and always includes loads in her kitchen designs on that Love It Or List It programme.
