Round or Rectangle dining table?

Hello, this is a new construction (to be completed end jun) so we are now busy thinking about how we want to furnish the house. The back of the house is all open, kitchen/diner/lounge.

Would like your opinions on what goes best next to the rectangle island. Thanks for your thoughts.

I like both, it just depends on the space. The rectangular table, in my opinion would look better the other way round, that is parallel with the windows.

The bugbear with rectangle tables as opposed to round IMO is that seats are spread out therefore it’s a nuisance when all seats are full and the passing of food, condiments, drinks etc.

Round is more sociable. Each person can reach their own items.

The beauty of a round table is that everybody sitting around the table can interact with everybody and there is no issue with straining necks to talk the person sitting two seats down form you. Although a round table to sit 10 people would have to be large and you would have a huge amount of space in the middle. Extending tables combat this issue allowing you to have a smaller table for intimate dinners and larger for bigger party's. There are many different extending tables on the market of all shapes and sizes most with the extra leaf kept under the table so you don't have to store it else where. However if you are thinking of using the table as more of an everyday kitchen table styles like the traditional refectory table are great because they can be bashed about or dressed up for dinner party's. room for small sofa and 4/6 seater circular dining table

measurement wall on left to back of chair. centre of room =2 metres. 2 seater sofa would be where standing cardboard is and front of seat is cardboard on floor. wondering is this too tight. 2nd photo ID "sofa"more at an angle. Given that both spaces won't be used at same time and work chairs pushed in after use , you'd have more space in stove area and also moving sofa if required for dining space. Circular table would have similar excursion into the room.

The room has a high level of squares and rectangles through the furniture style, the rug, the decorative glass on the right hand wall and the patio doors opposite so a rectangular table would certainly carry this theme on although a round table would pick up the roundness of the woodburner beautifully. Not really answered the question but maybe food for thought [pardon the pun!]

I prefer an oval shape. Eliminates square corners, looks a bit softer but still spacious for family gatherings.

It is said that the table should follow the room's shape but in your case it takes too much space, because it feels narrow. If you don't have a large family constantly eating there I recommend the round one or, even better, to keep the shape scheme, a small square one.

I don't think it matters as I think round, rectangular or oval would work but whichever shape you go for needs to be centred to the island ……

The rectangle table you have shown has curved corners and looks great so I would stick with that. If you decided to have a round take I would prefer that centred as well which may mean not having the unit along the wall.
