Funnily enough, i was giving similar advice to someone the other day. If you can buy a staircase ready made on the net ( there are a lot to choose from - top flight stairs are good ), they are unfinished pine, therefore you can finish them as you choose, paint, stain, wax - carpet - carpet runner etc. Then integrate this look with a glass ballustrade. The best prices for Glass Ballustrade I have found is on Ebay, again, there are many firms available all competing for business. The lady that i was helping the other day saved around 3K just on the Ballustrade alone! The combination of wood , glass and metal will still look great !

Hi Natasha Depends how modern or traditional you want the room to be and in keeping with the rest of the house I would recommend stand off fixings personally as there very minimalistic and if your keeping the staircase open as it is now this would be the best option, you can also fit a fletch plate and clad over it which would hide the fixings under the cladding. Most people do choose built in storage, with doors, for under the stairs. Or maybe some shelves with books and a little table and lamp? It depends what else you have in the room. It would also make a good spot for a pet bed, assuming you have one!

Ok guys so have started, not sure if I like the colour, the spindles have yet to be done in same colour as above panelling, wot colour of frames should I get when getting new pictures for up the stairs and should I do my mirror in the taupe or a different colour, I have started painting it taupe, also I now don't think the canvas goes or am I overthinking and overwhelmed lol
