Oof… we love our carpet and trying to keep this brief, without going into nerdy-techno-geek mode will be difficult for us, but here goes!

Eaton Square appear to be an independent retailer whom have de-branded products to make it harder to track the carpet back to the manufacturer. Companies do this to try to protect their enquiries and to keep their margins high.

Right, well, generalising now but there are just a few types of yarns/fibres that are used to make carpet:

Polypropylene (pp)

• Pros -> Robust, tough, cheapest yarn available
• Cons -> Worst at retaining appearance… in other words, quickest to flatten and eventually mat. Rough to the touch. Oil based product so not great for the environment.

Polyester (pe)

• Pros -> Similar qualities to pp but better appearance retention. Second cheapest yarn. Some, not all pe, carpets come from recycled plastic bottles which is a great environmental story.
• Cons -> Rough to the touch. Still oil based.

Polyamide (pa)

• aka nylon
• Pros -> Takes to dying very well, so tend to get cleaner and more vibrant looking colours. Incredibly soft to touch but don't be fooled, pa totally outperforms pp carpets and has fantastic appearance retention.
• Cons -> Equal as most expensive yarn. Still oil based BUT there is something exciting happening at the moment, where a new brand called ECONYL from Aquafil is using old, lost and/or discarded fishing nets. These are the flooring manufacturers producing carpets using this incredible yarn - click here for the brands - but as you see, ITC Natural Luxury Flooring aren't yet using this yarn.
• PA comes in several formats/qualities. "6.6" is recognised as the best performing pa yarn. All of your chosen products are made from 6.6 pa, which means, you've chosen the best wearing man made yarn possible AND it will feel unbelievably soft… win/win!!. The heavier the carpet, the more yarn used to produce it, the more expensive it will be. Cannes is 35% heavier than Chablis… that's why it's more expensive. Chablis, however, carries a heavy domestic wear rating so really, it comes down to what do you most prefer the look of most.

Wool

• Pros -> Comes from a renewable source (a sheep!!). Is bio-degradable and therefore the most kindest of yarns to the environment.. Naturally absorbs and breaths humidity, naturally repels soiling, fantastic for appearance retention, fire retardant and natural cosy feel (think of your favourite jumper!)
• Cons- > Equal third as most expansive yarn. Tends not have too many designs and styles, so limited in choice.

Also, final question. We have a young family - would a carpet like Chablis be difficult to maintain? By that, I mean if a drink were to be spilt for example, and immediately wiped with a damp cloth, would it be okay or would it be impossible to keep the carpet looking nice?

Hi, I went for Chablis and it’s an absolutely beautiful carpet, honestly. I love it and would get it again. But you do have to be careful with it to an extent - spilled water needs to be completely dried with multiple towels until fully absorbed and you wouldn’t want to drop anything on it generally (I know you don’t with most carpets, but this one you can’t just scrub anything out!). Based on the plumpness of my Chablis, I don’t personally think you need the thickness of Cannes. Will most likely flatten even more on regular walkways than the Chablis.

if you are buying from a showroom, they will possibly be able to take you to a house that has recently had it installed. Always worth an ask!

Just to add, I didn’t get it on the stairs. I got a stair runner with a border. Based on how the carpet wears, I would personally recommend not getting it on the stairs, I’m glad we listened to our carpet supplier.

I am worried about the cleaning side of things as I have 3 children and dont want to buy a carpet that should something spill may prove difficult to clean.

I have two little ones, but they are only 2&4 so don’t spill on carpets yet (apart from water 🙄). I’ll be honest, it won’t be good with spillages, youll have to act fast and even then it’s iffy. Our supplier recommended not having it in girls bedrooms (children get sick etc he said), but we wanted continuity of carpet. We have it in our lounge, all bedrooms and landings. Their playroom is a different, durable carpet which is nice, tones well with the other but not as luxurious. We were also recommended to have the stair runner carpet in the landing because of flattening piles, but we didn’t go with that. But if you wanted different carpets for bedrooms, that’s a good option.

We bought from a place called david Conran in esher, a chap named Ashley who is very good.

Here’s a theory for children and carpets: drinks only in the kitchen! Old fashioned I know but our cream carpet throughout our entire house still looked amazing after 2 boys growing up with all their friends over 8 years.....people who bought our house thought it had been put in for selling. A few parents came to enquire how we could possibly maintain that weird rule that their child had reported to them as existing elsewhere...
Oh another silly idea we had: tell me your feeling sick by hollering when standing over the loo.... so many times I happily went to assist with a smile on my face! Other bits of life with boys, yup we were a bit rubbish at, but the carpet factor, we rocked!

I agree with this. I don’t personally take drinks upstairs, so hopefully as kids get older it will be easy to instil into them as well. Ours do have water for bedtime though, which the little one used to like to pour out. Luckily that’s stopped!
