What Dining Table?

I need to buy a dining table but there’s so much design choices out there and I don’t know what to pick?!

We don’t have anything in the rooms to really match to. Our whole dining area is carpeted. We don’t want to spend over £400 on the table.

Any ideas how to work this space please? Thank you.

Would prefer a wooden top but quite flexible (which doesn’t help narrow anything down)

Quite like the industrial look ones but not sure if that’ll look okay in a carpeted room.

We want it to be 150-160cm long and preferably extendable to be able to seat more if we have to. Not wider than 90cm.

I think the radiator is dominating the room, it's a very modern rad in an otherwise period place, and therefore, looks a little out of place. I would spray the radiator the same colour as the wall or replace for a much smaller ( albeit deeper ) one to get the same BTU.

The green that you've chosen is lovely and works well with the black, but you need a bit of warmth in there. If you pick up on the taupe of the fireplace and put some wood in there it will help enormously. I'd also paint the alcoves a darker shade of green to add a bit of depth to the room.

I'd inset the modern blind at the window and buy curtains to warm the window up.

A wooden Chandelier and mirror to match will also help and tie in with the creamy taupe of the Fireplace. Copper and dusky pink work great with green.

I found quite a few tables on Etsy that don't break the bank, this one above works great with the black legs and the deep colour wooden top.

Chairs come from Made.com and actually come in a dusky pink if you want, they'd look great.

Or get a nice simple chunky secondhand oak table (and paint the legs charcoal). Then buy some industrial looking chairs. Some with 'tube legs' to make your carpet last longer.

If you have the bench built by a carpenter you should consider storage. You can have drawers (most expensive) openings for baskets (buy the baskets and build around it!) or top opening which would be good for things you don't need to get to very often. You could do a custom cushion to fit it or loose cushions, for the base cushion if you can't stretch to custom look at cushions for garden seating or Carolyn Donnelly in Dunnes (not sure if you have Dunnes) do rectangular flat cushions. Consider looking at a second hand website for a round table with pedestal and paint it if you don't like the finish. I find them for my clients all the time!! The one in the pic is IKEA I think and won't be very durable but a good stop gap option. You could also look at benches in IKEA and put together your own bench. It is worth the effort as you are sort of adding a sofa to the area and I am sure it will be one of your favourite bits of the house. Good luck with it!!

Hi Kelly. Wth the room shape I'd go for a rectangular table, what are the room dimensions? I remember you posting before and you liked oriental designs and were from Asia? Why don't you go for that look which also gives a modern feel with the chairs ? This is the canton table and wishbone chair from Lombok. They're on offer ATM, the chairs are out of stock but If you like them I would try ringing and pre-ordering if the website doesn't allow you to. I've got the chairs myself, I bought them whilst on offer and the day they were due to be delivered they brought out another offer which made them cheaper which they honoured after a frantic phone call! If jot by a brown table do do you mean wood with brown tones? You've got some grey tones in the floor so I think grey chairs could work

I had this myself recently - I ended up I did go with a wooden table - a vintage one with multiple shades so it would still contrast and not look too much/samey. I also put a jute rug beneath mine and once you dress the top with a runner and a plant/vase etc it looks great. Alternatively white always works and I love concrete but expensive - concrete resin - metal can also be a good option - I wouldn't go with glass - I feel it's dated.

Radiator and blinds are new so those can’t really be changed right now.

I did want to paint the alcoves darker but unfortunately they are not dark enough and now it’s all on the walls there’s not enough contrast and it looks very similar to the room colour. I will eventually paint them darker.

What kind of table and chairs would you recommend to make it go a bit more ? Shall I get a rug underneath? I need some

Where you can see the doorway there - it goes into the kitchen. Recommendations for internal doors would also be great.

I was actually looking at those chairs on made.com , I like the dusky pink but worried about my little one getting stains on them! Would a deep green or blue work? Anything a bit deeper ?

This room is one half of the lounge diner which is also identical to this room. What colour sofas would look nice with that grey and green?

These chairs Made.com Thelma chairs come in an array of colours, the ones I put in the picture were dark grey and they come in that colour. They do come in green but I think it's a horrid green and I don't like them, they are wipeable!

You don't need to change the rad, but I would paint it so that it disappears. However, once you soften the room up with soft furnishings, you won't notice it so much. Likewise, with the blind, just cut it down to fit inside the window and put up curtains.

I definitely wouldn't put a rug under a dining table, especially with small kids about. There are loads of tables on Etsy with wooden tops and black legs to tie in with the black in the room.

if you have a small child, I would very seriously consider changing the flooring. it would leave you more table options too. I know it's more expensive but probably the last thing you want is to spend money on matching table and chairs and then be replacing flooring after a year.
I have a 4yo and a 2yo and there is no way a carpet like this could be in my dining room :))

Yes I know, it’s a lounge diner and hubby is set on carpet after living with wood floors for years. So the carpet will be staying for comfort rather than style.

I much prefer the look of wood floors personally, but would like this to work for both of us .

LOL Aleksandra, I have old pine floors (with rather big gaps) and we've been having a translucent mat (the type that protects floors from desk chairs) under the table for 4 years now.
