Garden help please

Hello, I’m after some pointers for my garden of low cost improvements that can be made to it. I’ve removed LOTS of flower beds to make room for grass for my son to play and also for a low maintenance garden. However now it looks like I need to add some back. Any suggestions on shape and location? btw the mud patch at the end of the garden is soon to be more grass!

Hi. I think your garden looks really nice as it is but I see what you mean about creating extra room for flower beds. I think if you push out where the beds are now a little it should look lovely. Very easy as well as all you’d have to do is move the edging stones then dig up the turf, churn the soil up with garden fork and add some extra compost. At a little extra cost I think it might be nice to add a patio area under where your table and chairs are currently. You could have a go at this yourself as there are plenty of online tutorials and could even source reclaimed slabs from second hand sites such as ebay, gumtree etc. I scribbled on your photos to give you an idea (click to enlarge). P.s. I think the whirligig washing line could be placed somewhere more discreet or better still replaced with a retractable one somehow. I know they’re necessary, just my personal opinion but I’m not a huge fan of the whirly ones:)

Make sure your patio is large enough. I always like it to be at least a 4x4 metres, depending on the size of the garden and how you want to use it. Use string and wooden pegs to design your garden and see how it feels. Consider the view from the house into the garden too.

If it was my garden I'd definitely keep the tree to screen out the train line. I'd have a little circle of lawn around where the watering can is (you can get shade tolerant grass seed or maybe even artificial grass) for picnics etc. I'd plant the rest up with shade loving plants like ferns, white dicentra, alchimilla molis (sp?) and shade loving white geraniums. I'd actually keep the bridge while the children are young and make a feature of it. Maybe it could be the way in to a play area bit at the bottom of the garden. You could put a trelis up and grow shade tolerant climbers to screen of the rest of the area (some climbing roses are shade tolerant and thornless these days so very child friendly). I'd finish it off with some lights on the trees and in the borders for evening time.

Hi Tacita, I think that a decking at the level of the house floor that extends the house to the outdoors would look great just outside your pretty garden doors! It is also generally a cheaper than a patio. I think that overall you should establish what you want to use the garden for: an area of lawn for the children will be important, but apart from that and an area for entertainment (deck or patio), what else would you like to use the garden for? growing fruit and veg? is there any features that you would like in the garden? water fetaure, pergola, arches etc? This will help you to determine what areas you need to have in the garden and the best way to divide it and give it shape and form. You don't necessarily need to cover the new bit of fence. But perhaps having some ornamental trees that will give you year around interest such as a cherry tree or amelanchier would be a good idea. Very nice garden, but my first thought was remove that clothes dryer - it’s like an exclamation mark in the middle of your garden. I have a retractable one, so it’s tucked away in its holder when not in use. I don’t have much to add but I do remember my gardening mad neighbour decided to wait until her children were grown up before she set about creating the gorgeous garden she has now, but I know that’s probably quite a wait! You can always add a few shrubs along the sides such as Viburnum tinus, Cotinus, Sambucus nigras, Hibiscus, Japanese maples, Hydrangeas etc. You will have to check how much sun the area gets to ensure conditions are right for the shrubs. However if you enlarge the borders as Rachel suggests you can then include summer perennials as well as plant bulbs in the autumn.

Thank you, all very useful and def gives me something to start with. it really helps to see the positioning of the flower beds and making them bigger looks great. I love the planting ideas too..... Changing the washing line placement was on my list too, so I’ll check out your suggestions for the new line too. i think the tweaks you suggested will really help make it a bit more finished and grownup. Thanks again.
