Marble backsplash ledge

Does anyone know how a marble (or quartz, granite, etc.) ledge that sits on top of the backsplash is supported? From photos online, it appears to be floating, without brackets. Wouldn’t drilling into the back of such a thin piece of stone crack or at least weaken it too much.

It’s supported with money. Lots of money.

The design plan for something like that starts in the framing stage, and uses stainless steel supports in the framing.

It depends on the material and the width of the ledge. Engineered stone is much stronger than any natural material and will cantilever safely with less support.

Tiles are one way to introduce some pops of colour in your kitchen. If you are worried about the grout discolouring, use epoxy grout which is more resilient to liquid staining. Also, if you use a coloured grout, discolouration will be less noticeable. If you choose textured tiles with rectilinear edges, grout lines are almost invisible. Using tiles can look more traditional compared to glass or stainless steel. The problem with stainless steel is keeping it looking good. Drip marks and grease are instantly noticeable. Glass is less obvious when splashed. They are both more industrial and modern looking. What about using the same material that makes up your worktop as the splashback? Most manufacturers of manmade worktops also do an 11mm thick splashback and upstand.

Just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who helped with ideas, and especially Jen for giving me a bit of inspiration and a light bulb moment! You are so right, holding your nerves whilst it’s going up is the hardest!! . I did opt for a splash back only and extended it so it goes a little under the cupboards. Shutterstock [website] supply high quality images, either photo's videos, AI images etc and they're sold under licence on behalf of the original artist, so there's a massive library of images to choose from so you should be able to see the image before approval. Then the glass is screen printed on the reverse before going through the toughening process, all the glass i've seen which has been screen printed has looked stunning and i'd assume your glass supplier would have pictures and samples of their work [decent sized not little 100mm squares]. Cost wise though your cheapest option would be as Sonia says to go down the laminate splashback route which is a diy option.

I've seen this at one of my sister's houses in Europe. Her stone shelf is supported by a thick stainless steel shelf (in an upside down L shape) that reaches down behind the backsplash. The stone shelf itself is either routed out to make room for the steel to be hidden, or it might have a mitered front edge, I'm not sure. The steel is not visible unless one crouches down and peers up. Her shelf is rock solid and could support much more than the couple of cups, glasses, small plates and framed artwork that she keeps on it. By the way, it's hanging on a concrete wall, no studs and spans the length of the wall.

so this upside down L is continuous? As well on a non concrete wall it would be drilled and mounted onto the studs-- And then the backsplash material goes up to hide all of this?
