Seeking Advice for Backsplash Tile Color in Newly Revamped Kitchen

Greetings everyone,

We've recently bought a house and nearly fished revamping the old kitchen. The changes include repainting the cabinets in Dimpse F&B, updating the handles, replacing the countertop with quartz, refreshing the walls with Strong White F&B, and upgrading the flooring.

Our current dilemma lies in selecting the color for the backsplash tile. We're seeking a shade that infuses warmth into the room while ensuring the off-white tone of the cabinets remains prominent without risking the kitchen's style becoming quickly outdated. We're open to suggestions and would greatly appreciate any insights or recommendations you may have.

I would keep it very neutral. Maybe zellige or larger format tiles as subways are very busy and the kitchen is not simple. I would avoid anything bright as it's the wrong balance. If you chose a large format porcelain tile in a warm neutral I don't think you would regret it. By warm I mean off white. The shine of zellige's in white or off white would look great if your budget allows. A sludgy green could also work.

I agree that tiles that are too small can look dated but very large format can means a lot of wastage. Given you have chosen such a classic color, neutral Quartz and floor I would love to see some pattern. It doesn’t have to be a lot but perhaps a marble style style with some grey veining to tie in with the Dimpse or perhaps a soft white self patterned tile. I like this one from Topps Tiles

Wow some great advice here, sorry I have not responded for a while. So far I've decided to definately have a deep single bowl under mount sink, I will take the advice to hide the machines behind doors. Also I am going to have the stacking kit as the folding board will give me additional useable space. I don't know if the cupboards in the middle will make the space look heavy? at 5"11" I fear I might be constantly bumping my head against it. My kitchen cabinets are pale cream from Howdens, do you think it would look odd if I have the utility cupboards a light grey with a bold tiled backsplash? Thank you all for showing my your utility rooms really appreciate your advice all your advice and would really like to see some more pics of your space saving ideas and how you made your utility rooms more functional. Did not imagine such a small space would give me so many considerations on how to get the space right.

Hi Sarah, Huge rug under dining table - big yes! As I mentioned before, just make sure it it doesn't have a deep pile and is fairly easy to clean / hoover. This will break up the black considerably! The rug size needs to be big enough to pull all your chairs out and they still sit on the rug - that's the minimum right size. Just a thought about finding the right paint colour for your walls and cabinets to brighten everything up. When my family took a trip down to cornwall, we stayed in this lovely cottage in the country-side. The cottage had small little deep windows, so didn't get much light in. However the cottage was so bright, warm & crisp. It had been painted a white that really really worked - white can be tricky to get right. So I called the owners of the cottage to see if they had a paint can laying around so I could find out the exact colour. It was straight Brilliant White - standard paint you can get for kitchens, walls, ceilings, masonry, etc in whatever finish you need (matt, sheen, semi-gloss or gloss). I've used it a couple of times sinse to freshen up or update an area, to make small spaces pop, or just to bring a whole space that crisp - perfect white look to show off art and objects (it is one of the few whites that can do so well as art and objects usually look dull or get lost with a plain white background). This might help with your project as it is the best paint for reflecting light and brightening your areas - but it is bright - so you will have to do a test area to see if it is too bright for you, in which case go with a white toned down from that. Think the rug(s) & the paint colour change of walls & cabinets will work the best for you since you've spent a lot on your interior already and your husband likes it as is - it is hard to justify large costs when your partner thinks it is great and you've already spent a lot.. We chose to put our sink in our island as it was the best place for it. Our island is very long so it can accommodate the sink on one end with a clear space on the other end for seating - I am personally very against having a hob in the island as it will send splatters of hot oil etc. across the island and people (kids) sitting there. I also think the current trend for open shelves is odd - I always think they just end up looking cluttered (beyond the perfected curated pages of houzz), and everything will get dusty and oily if near the hob. One thing that we did in our kitchen was include a defined tiled area around the island - I love it and everyone comments on it. It may help add that little bit of extra in your design. (please ignore 1) our bar stools - we still need to get 2 more! and 2) the hole on the left where our broken wine fridge is waiting to be replaced!)

Nothing wrong with white tiles but choose an interesting shape such as hexagonal, or perhaps lovely Zelig tiles as Isla suggests which create a traditional look but still trendy, if that makes sense! Zelig tiles are first two pics. They come in the gentlest of colours but have a lovely pearlised finish.

Fab thanks Sonia. It seems like I should keep it neutral from what I have heard so far. Perhaps I can inject some colour into the kitchen by painting one of the walls rather… a lot easier to change too if I get bored of the colour or if it goes out of fashion

Yes that’s what I did. Very pale cream units but I change the wall colour when I fancy it. I do also love patterned Moroccan tiles but not for everyone!

Congratulations on your new kitchen, we hope you're enjoying it!

We understand that choosing kitchen tiles and backsplash could be confusing, there's so much in the market!

You could go with a similar material you've used for the worktop, so it feels and looks continuous. You could also go with a mirrored look to expand the space, visually.

We love Kit Kat tiles, they're making a comeback in the market.
