Kitchen layout advice!!
Hi all,
I would be very grateful if you lovely people would cast an eye over a provisional kitchen layout plan. My husband and I are renovating our Victorian terrace and whilst we are lucky to have a fair space to play with, it‘s all very new to us. We haven’t used any professional planning services as we are hoping to buy through DIY kitchens so have made use of their online planner.
Although it’s not clear in the pic the sink is a double belfast that will be in the unit opposite the range cooker. We are planning to have open shelving over the units on the right instead of wall cupboards to keep the space feeling light and open. In the bottom left there are 2 units to represent a kitchen table as we want to use the space for entertaining too. The freestanding cupboard in the bottom right is to be a larder cupboard and the freestanding one on the right is for crockery
Please let me know if you can see any obvious issues or improvement that these 2 newbies might have missed.

7 years agoIt might be you have overlooked the needed space for a dining table?
Where is your current plumbing? (especially drain pipe) And which walls are external, just the ones with windows in them?- 7 years ago
By centering the sink (and range) in front of the window you'd create some more workspace on your countertops. I added a bit of wall on the 40cm corner, imagine some niches with cookbooks there, for example. Large units next to it. There's about 300cm between fridge and wall for dining. Extendable table could be placed sideways occasionally. Upper cabinets on the cooking side, none on the washing side. Extractor hood built into a either clasical or modern chimney hood (or cabinets). Freestanding cabinet could be anything (I'd place a sidetable for mostly decorative purposes) or left out completely.

Comments (9)I think the kitchen layout is great, however instead of a traditional hob on the island, I would personally opt for an induction hob/cooktop. That way you won't have to fear that your children will accidentally touch it and burn themselves (read how induction cooktops work). It's also completely flat unlike traditional hobs, so when you are looking at the kitchen from different angles, you won't even notice it, and when you do, it's just nicer, it's just more modern and elegant. I've also seen induction cooktops designed for islands, instead of the traditional 2x2 arranged in a square, you can find one that is rectangular, all 4 circles in a single line, and I think those look great. Also they have some that have built-in ventilation (that goes into the island), so you won't need a huge exhaust hood above the island in the middle of the kitchen. Also I've noticed the design on the sink, and I personally think that that style of sink takes up a lot of space without providing too much function (I've had it in my previous home). Comments (5)Hi there, it would be good to see the layout of the next floor - as the comment above says, you bathroom is probably above the kitchen so all pipes and waste is running through that wall. If you were able to, i would knock down the wall between the kitchen and dining room, and leave the location of the kitchen where it is, but make it bigger and possibly incorporate an island as well. Comments (5)Hi there! It sounds like a fantastic project, and getting the flow right between the kitchen and lounge is so important. Option 1: Keep the sliding pocket door. This would give you convenient access between the kitchen and lounge, helping the space feel open and connected. It’s ideal for quick movement between rooms, though you do lose some wall space in both areas. Option 2: Block the access between the kitchen and lounge. This would give you more wall space, which is great for extra storage or layout flexibility in each room. However, you’d have to go through the hall to reach the lounge, which could disrupt the flow slightly. If you value an open feel and easy access, keeping the door could work well. Another possible layout we had considered was this one below, as the square section at the back has a higher sloped ceiling and skylight so thought it might be a nice nook for eating in. However I can’t seem to find space to fit a larder cupboard (we cant use right up to the front wall on the right as there is a step down into the kitchen
PRO7 years agoHere is a suggestion to shift the circulation route to one side and place a dining table at the end. This could make the kitchen more comfortable to use if it is not also a corridor. The dividing unit could be a narrow cube shelf unit and possibly add some shallow shelves on the right wall for some of the kitchen items. Is there any possibility to move the kitchen door opening to the right to provide a C shaped kitchen.

Alternative layout:
Plumbing moved, range and sink+dw on one side. Tall units with boiler, micro/steam oven, fridge freezer, storage. Washing machine with drawers next to it where coffee machine and toaster could go. Round dining table (diameter here is 100cm). No freestanding cabinets. Also no cabinets in the dining area, as cabinets aren't flexible and space is tight. If more counterspace is needed, downsize sink or range.
