Trying to find a “silver lining” for unwanted tan windows
Hi all! I’m brand new to Houzz but I’d be grateful for anyone’s advice with my dilemma! A family member has overseen our new house build while we’ve been overseas. We’ve just arrived to discover that due to a miscommunication, the white windows that would have matched our strongly-desired colour scheme of deep blue/grey/white trim with copper accent, are instead a rather not-our-style tan vinyl, from Milgard.
Help!!
Is there any way of saving this?!
I’m concerned that the tan would clash badly with white and wondering if we need to throw our ideal dream house colours out and make do with something else? If so, does anyone have any bright ideas for alternatives? We like a rustic but bright and fresh look.
Or any ideas for how to paint over or hide the tan colour? We are also over budget quite significantly so don’t think it’s an option to replace the windows, unfortunately.

The room looks like a cute little period bedroom not a converted warehouse (yes, I do know the industrial style is very fashionable at the moment). Personally, I like the idea of having a whole wall of curtains. Alternatively, is there a wallpaper with the same pattern that you could use on the wall? Comments (9)The thing is if you go for long curtains, when you pull them you will be blocking all the heat from the radiator that sits under the window, which is daft. Admittedly longer curtains certainly add to a luxurious feel, but blocking your source of heat behind them won't work. Thus, I would stick to sill length curtains, but make the most of how they are made. Double pinch pleat with little buttons and a beautiful pole will add luxury.Chenille or velvet in a plain gold or beautiful white would look stunning. Curtains to Go . You could also do either of the above ( chenille or velvet ) in silver Silver Chenille, Silver velvet As an alternative ( because of the radiator ), Why not go for Thermal backed Roman blinds to drop at night, with full length curtains that you don't draw and are for show only. Comments (63)Hi all-I'm back:). Happy New Year! After a much needed holiday and some down-time, I am back on track! I decided to postpone the redecoration of my office till week after next so that I could take my time in choosing paint colours. I ordered 10 tester colours from Dulux and have been playing with them at work this morning. It's quite incredible how colours on your computer screen look nothing like they do when rolled on white paper or your wall! I'm so pleased I got these tester samples. My plan was to paint my 3 main walls (the only walls that will be painted) a light lilac with the false wall (below my window) a darker grey. But having seen the colours on the wall I could probably get away with a light grey for my 3 main walls and a darker lilac for the false wall-ledge. I want the false wall to stand out and be approx. 2 shades darker than the main walls. Having spoke to Dulux on the phone the woman advised against certain colours as they would make the room feel "closed in". Because it's a small space I do need to be careful not to use too dark a colour for the main walls. I've decided I'm keeping my purple blind so am basing my paint colour choice around the blind, and the grey chairs that I will be ordering from IKEA...attached/uploaded somewhere earlier in this thread:). I've already eliminated a couple of the tester colours simply because I find them too "baby pink"-as if for a newborn baby girl's room (i.e., Lavender Blossom=bottom colour on left) & Soft Montelimar 4=bottom colour on right). I don't want anything too girlie-most of my clients are men:). I've painted 5 colours on the left and 5 colours on the right-hopefully you can make out top to bottom, etc. I like Violet White (the top colour on the left) as a possibility for the 3 main walls, or Goose Down (top left), with Lavender Quartz (4th down on left), Grey Steel 2 (4th down on right) or Chic Shadow (2nd from top on left) as possible colours for my accent false wall (below the window). I love Lavender Quartz but fear it may be too dark for the 3 main walls. So this is where I'm at at the mo! 7 years agoI like the colour of the windows and doesn’t it look good with white in Carolina’s pics? I wouldn’t call it tan, more a French Grey as is often used on kitchen cupboards. Is it a little like this, which is Little Greene’s French Grey?

Thank you all for your comments! We went back to look again today and it doesn’t look quite as dark in the middle of the day. I think it might well be similar to a French gray, although possibly with slightly more brown in it. We think we might try to put a natural-stain wood as a trim around it and go for our original scheme of wood floor, light grey walls, white kitchen cupboards and dark blue island with copper pendant lights and copper accents, something a little like the images below.
Am just hoping the brown wood will blend the brown/grey trim so that it doesn’t clash! It sounds like you all think it will be fine which is reassuring!
- 7 years agoHere is a mock up of what I was thinking could work with the tan colour for the exterior. Any thoughts? I welcome constructive criticism! (The garage doors will be a darker brown but the colour shown was the closest I could find.)

The kitchen looks amazing! The wooden areas give it warmth and go together beautifully. However, I’m honestly not sure about the brown garage doors. I personally would match them to the windows, unless the garage doors are a natural wood finish? That can look good.
Garage and front doors are often matched and can look very smart, if you don’t want to match with the windows. Here’s some examples
