You could try yellows or blues. Maybe add a feature floral, chinoiserie or trellis style wallpaper. Add green with plants and maybe a sunburst mirror. Dulux and I think crown do a visulaiser app so you can upload a pic of your room and try various colours. It's a bit tricky to use to start with but you get the hang of it after a few minutes

White would look fab, especially if you have a wooden floor. I’ve got a very dark hall and stairs and I painted it Dulux Egyptian Cotton but it’s maybe a little dingy. A very pale grey would also work. Pick a grey you like then go a shade lighter as a dark hallway can make many greys look dingy too. Good luck.

I have a small open plan kitchen/living room that I'm struggling to settle on a paint colour for. The cabinets take up most of the wall space in the kitchen area and are a dark, reflective grey with a minimalist design (similar to: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/d0/4d/69/d04d69bab448e2a5d141e63c1bd8b0f2.jpg) The countertops are a white granite speckled with grey and black. My key colour is orange which I have for some appliances and small things. I've put up a backsplash of simple white tiles that covers the walls about a foot above the countertops. The living room furniture is a mix of dark grey/black fabrics and metal work with mid-tone natural wood (similar to the first on the left here: http://floorsandldn.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Swatch1.jpg). The flooring throughout is in the same tone of wood. I would like to be bold and go with a dark grey (e.g. Ink from Neptune https://www.neptune.com/interior-decor/paint/ink-paint/) on the walls, but I'm having trouble finding a tone that will work with the cabinets, which change so much depend on what light they're reflecting. This is making me think I should instead go for a mid- or light grey, but I don't want to tone it down so much that it loses the impact and ends up not working! I'm keeping the ceiling and skirting boards white and using a lot of light/white cushions and throws to stop it becoming too dark. Any help much appreciated as it's been far too long I've been dithering over this!

Thankyou all for your responses. I am answering all the questions as follows: 1. The units colour is Porcelain (Howden's Elmbridge Kitchen Units). 2. The original wall colour is Dulux Ivory Lace. 3. The kitchen and utility room is East facing and the sun is in the rooms in the morning and switches to the front of the house in the afternoon. 4. As advised earlier, all of the grey variants we have tried are coming out in shades of lilac through to mauve/purple unless we go with a deep grey which is too dark for the room. 5. Any help on alternative colours which maintain the airy light feel of the rooms would be very much appreciated including creams etc. I look forward to your thoughts/suggestions.
