I kinda like #2 bit is there no window in your laundry room? asking because it affects cabinet and storage placement. Also- It's going to be cave-like. I like natural light to see if stains have been removed and things like that.

Hi Cynthia! Option 2 is my preferred layout as well but I’m struggling to find a sink small enough for that nook will allowing clearance for the washer!

There will be a skylight in the laundry room but unfortunately no window. My city has very onerous permitting requirements for windows (bc that exterior wall is close to the property line/neighbors home) so it would be very costly to even research the option of putting a window there. :(

would you consider a modern top load washer? I can't stand my front loader and as soon as it dies I am replacing it with a top loader. That would give you more width.

I am open to stacking the sideloaders but my hesitation is two-fold:

1. Control panel for dryer will be hard to reach/view
2. Does stacking w/d cause any vibration issues? The laundry room will be upstairs.

I am also open to a top loader (my initial choice!) but then again read that agitator-less toplpaders aren’t as good at cleaning (I have two young boys that are hard on clothes! Haha). Oh, and I prefer agitator-less toploaders bc I occasionally would like to wash big heavy blankets. :)

I only have a laundry closet in my powder room, so the powder room sink is right there, but I rarely even use it for laundry purposes. I’d definitely want a sink in your laundry room, but I don’t think a big one is necessary. Get a little wall mounted sink.

Option 2 it is. I was able to find some “space saving sinks” that will fit that nook (unfortunately, they’re not as deep as utility sinks but it’ll just have to do!) and still allow clearance for a front loading standard sized washer. I prefer a top loader but between capacity (with agitator) or cleaning ability (without agitator), I’ll just take my risk with a front loader.

How skinny is your skinny counter? Is it deep enough to choose the skinny counter with small deep stainless steel bar sink w/faucet w/high arc near one end of it enabling you to have enough elbow room on both sides for washing small "dainties"?

If you're right handed, you might could put the faucet to your sink on the left side rather than on the back but that wouldn't be my first choice.

Can you zoom out a bit and show more of the plan? Is it renovation or new build?

I have never had a laundry sink and I have never missed it and now the new washers can handle anything you would have used the sink for I would do the long shelf on the left it will be more useful than a sink IMO

If you want a top loader, get a Speed Queen. They have agitators. For super dirty stuff, I use a long soak, filling the machine, letting it agitate to mix the detergent & stopping the machine & allowing the load to soak.

I grew up with a laundry sink & have had one in every house that we've owned including one in a house we rented. Would not want to be w/o. Besides what everyone else said, I use mine to soak dirty, smelly sneakers.

I like option #2. If you choose front loaders, the extra space will assure than any front loader will fit. It also affords wiggle room for moving the washer & dryer for repairs and cleaning the dryer duct. And, depending on the dimensions of the W&D, you should have room for a small freestanding floor cabinet along side, if you want/ need extra storage.

Generally, front load and top load are the same width at 27” wide.

I would go with option 2. I would use kitchen upper cabinets as the base cabinets long the sink wall and run the countertop over the washer and dryer as well. Maybe a smaller bar sink would work, or a trough sink. I love laundry room sinks so much that it was one of the first remodels we did in our new home.
