What do you mean by a light natural carpet? Is it a tan/beige browny colour, or a taupe? Pictures of this would be really helpful.

I think emerald green is a very elegant colour and works well grey. Here are some images I found which may help you to visualise how green can work, including your beloved pink!

I love the emerald green scheme, it is very classy. My only thought in using it in the curtains with your dark grey sofa, in a very light coloured or airy room, will create a confusion of where the focus in the room is.

Generally the darkest piece of furniture I’ve found is always a pull for attention and adding dark curtains may cause competition. I’m sure professional interior designers will have a way around it but I wouldn’t know how to diffuse that focus. Possibly darker walls to help the eye flow?

I would choose what you love the most, the sofa or the curtains and use those as a starting point. I’m just going through a house renovation so completely understand the frustrations and the brain mush! Personally I would use the dark grey sofa as a starter and accent with emerald green cushions, as well as accessories. You can keep the carpet and walls light to keep the room feeling open and airy. Perhaps a rug with a soft pattern, possibly incorporating a pale green? I love the image above with the green throw as an accent.

I’ve found a few more pictures online with dark sofas using green as an accent, hope that helps. The other thing I’ve tried is to buy stuff, try and return if they don’t fit..at least you get to see how it looks in the room.

Hi, I think you are on trend with this colour combination. What to be mindful of is the colour on the walls, and as they are white, both colours will stand out. Therefore I would soften this colour scheme with bras accessories, clever lighting that will create zones and also something connecting those two on the wall (prints, painting etc). Also cushions with block and then leafy patterns and you will end up with a beautiful coherent look.

Maybe consider painting just a one wall to tie up the entire look.

I think it depends what your vibe is. Some people like saturated clean vibrant colours, some people (like myself) prefer muted earthy colours and lots of texture. I would also think about colour temperature. White walls, emerald green and grey may appear quite cool (temp) as a scheme, and as Esma pointed out, the value contrast between the curtains and wall will be very dominant. Its really difficult when you only have tiny samples, the carpet looks lovely, but it is hard to see what 'colour' it will appear when it's over a whole area. I am definitely with Beano about mustard and amber in terms of going with grey. Here are some images which show deep cool greens with white and amber (which includes wood). To me, the cognac, amber, tan leather (or whatever we call it) looks fab with white and lends a lovely mellow 70's vibe to the rooms. In the last image the walls aren't white and that lends a bit more warmth. Of course, white walls in a south facing room may look the same.

funny my eye was drawn to the second pic straight away, love it, reminds me of my parents old house that I spent my early years in (the one my orange dining chairs originally came from) tbh I’ve my livingroom very dark grey at the moment, I love it and it looks great but it doesn’t feel inviting to me :-( I’m seriously considering painting it all white, I love white! Lol

Yes Beano that second pic would probably be my dream room. I realise that almost everything I like harks back to something, like a feeling in my childhood, and being a child of the seventies, I like certain things. Not avocado and purple or that stuff, but lots of craft, warm neutrals rather than urban cools, brown (I LOVE browns) and anything that looks like it could have come from a Conran book in the late seventies! I love white walls in certain houses, I have just come back form St. Ives where the flat we rented was bright white, but the difference is in the quality of light. When you have light bouncing off the Atlantic Sea onto a peninsula, white walls are amazing.

It’s a funny thing, I’m not a victim of trends but I do sometimes like to experiment, I have a couple of very dark grey feature walls with the other three walls being brilliant matte white, those two rooms look great as do the other all white rooms in my home.

thing is, the dark grey living room works aesthetically but it has always lacked the inside feeling I get from my other rooms, it’s sort of nice to look at but doesn’t feel as nice to be in, as with you, some of us have a deep, ingrained make up of what we like and feel good with from way back and none of the latest trends and such will ever change us :-), I might be stuck in the 70s but I like it there :-) it’s still nice to see what others like are are doing though!

People tend to use stronger bolder colours in urban areas and urban apartments and softer pastel tones in houses and country. The busier life the stronger colours are very often chosen to keep up with the vibe. I usually get an inspiration from something, like a view from the window, a rug, a scarf, a bouquet, plant, tree etc and work around it adding and taking colours or textures away. Decorating a house is a ongoing process for me and it usually changes with a season, mood and time. I always go with how it feels. Colours are so subjective to each person, the light and texture. My husband can’t see green and red and it’s quite common apparently. I love all colours, but sometimes I wonder if I see them differently to other people.
