colour scheme help for open plan kitchen/living area

This house is unfurnished (the furniture in pics are not ours), it has pale blue walls, wooden floors, offwhite kitchen cabinets. What are the best colours to use, such as sofas/cushions etc? We do love to inject colour so not afraid of bold ideas! We are looking to buy a 3 seat sofa, two armchairs,coffee table and maybe a rug. There will be no dining table in this room so the space in the centre will be empty. We also are looking for a tv unit to put on the right by the doors and have no idea what colour cabinet is best in a room like this.

I love the colours on the walls..clean and fresh..why not use similar colours in darker shades...and texture in the textiles... cushions throws...pull the colour out in the kitchen too..great place..

It's an awkward one as a lot of the kitchen is in the dining area, and the space that you don't want to have a table & chairs is opposite the sink.

You could put one of the armchairs there. Keep the sofa where one is at the moment. You could go for a darker cognac leather or dark grey. Grey tones go with the brick.

A nice bright rug would look good, but I'd keep the walls light and airy as they are now.
In order to place something like this arrangement, you will have an armchair near to the sink.

Although the kitchen is lovely...........If you ever have the budget, i'd consider moving the kitchen around. Change the island possibly for a smaller one and turn the side run of units along the left hand wall to across the room for 'U' Shape, giving you a much better sofa / lounge area.

I agree with many of the suggestions above, especially that there's too much furniture in the living room. You're going to hate me for saying this but I think there's too much clutter and busyness overall for such a small space. I'd radically reduce the number of pictures and knick-knacks in both rooms – especially the living room – and move the ones you keep to less prominent places. I'd also take the coat rack and cookery bookshelves out completely, and replace the busy parquet flooring with either not-busy plank laminate or a simple-patterned or solid rug. Finally, I like trees but that spidery palm tree is hideous IMO.

Thank you for your response. We had plans pretty finalised until we found out that we can keep just that long wall into the large space as it is a load-bearing. There is an opportunity to put a door in though. I am attaching what it looked like with all the walls that we can now remove. We have also been tinkering with ideas which I am adding as well. I added some comments on the plans as well. What we want to have is a dining area with a large table that seats 8-10 people. We want enough space for two people to work and cook in the kitchen. Thus, we were thinking of an island or an L-shape workspace coming out. We'd like to have a utility room to have space for all the cleaning utensils. Washer and Dryer will be upstairs in a separate laundry room. The living room is nothing formal but an area to relax and watch TV. We'd like to have an L-shaped cough in there for a family of four (2 kids under the age of 10).

pretty much any wood colour will go with white tiles! I would avoid plain white/cream tiles in your kitchen though, they will be a real pain to keep clean especially if you have pale grout too. We have porcelain wood tiles in our open plan room, engineered wood chevrons in our living room, glass doors between. Honestly the two don’t “match” but I don’t mind, each is the best floor for its space which is more important. The doors aren’t often open anyway.

Congratulations, it looks a beautiful space. I think I'd go for a soft industrial look. The wall colour is lovely but seems to break up the kitchen units a little? They look to be painted in purbeck stone so might do the walls in ammonite. You could also do the island in blue and maybe add moulding? I'd go for a navy velvet Chesterfield which will look great against the brick. The nesting tables are notre monde and they have some beautiful trays to go on top. I'd add art over the sofa in predominantly cool tones and add an overarching lamp of sorts. One of the plug in wall lights may look good by the tv if there's room. I might just add one chair and a sheepskin pouffe. Add more colour for cushions and a large plant somewhere. Aberber style rug should work or a distressed vintage style
