Utility room decor help please!
We’ve recently put in a small utility room. I’m pleased with it functionally as we’ve squeezed a lot in, but it needs some more interesting decoration as we ran out of steam ... it’s all plain white at the moment, apart from the floor which is wood look tiles. It’s a small high ceilinged windowless room so a bit of a challenge!
Two questions:
1). What sort of splashback would look good here?
2). Should I paint the end wall a colour, perhaps to tie in with the splashback? Or hang pictures? Might be a good place to display kids’ artwork somehow?

Comments (6)Here’s a few things I’m doing in our planned utility (smaller than yours!) which might work for you: - Electric towel rail for heating so I can easily have that room heated when the general heating is off. Better than underfloor heating for this scenario as ufh is quite slow to warm up, also the towel rail can be used to dry off wet gloves, hats, coats in the winter. - Pocket door so it doesn’t get in the way of any cupboards - Mirrored splashback and handleless doors to make the room seem wider (ours is only 1.7m wide, not so necessary for you perhaps) - Stacked washer and dryer using stacking kit with pull out shelf between. I find this easier than having everything at floor level. If you want yours side by side, I would suggest raising them up a bit to save your back, and get drawers fitted underneath to hold all the laundry liquids. You don’t have any on your plan? I would certainly add some, or open shelves which are more practical but less tidy. In fact I’m having wall cabinets and another row of wall cabinets above them for things used occasionally (christmas decorations etc) as we have high ceilings. - We will have a tall slot next to the broom cupboard to hold ironing board and ladder. - How about a transom/clerestory window (up high) to add more light without getting in the way of cabinets? Or, a narrow window each side of the door would fit, since wall cabinets aren’t as deep as base cabinets....See Moreutility room help please!
Comments (13)What about, if you create a built in tall cabinet where the fridge/freezer now and place your freezer on the bottom and the dryer on the top with some storage above it. Install a couple of washing lines or a wardrobe rod above and across the window , a basket cabinet to the left where the dryer is now, single sink without a drainer. Don’t have any wall cabinets and instead you can have some foldable wall mounted washing lines. Keep it a simple white and wood scheme (as colourhappy) , some white subway wall tiles if needed and colour or striking black and white floor (as One Plan suggested). The fan is a very good idea. Comments (9)Thanks Jonathan I think you have a point about the budget I have been quoted between 40-60k Hoping it will be around 50 K but willing to go till 60k The problem is if it tips over , or something new comes up, such as the roof, I will be in a tight spot So some plans To definitely do 1) Fully strip the wall paper, cladding, plaster and re painr 2) New kitchen ( thinking of taking 0% finance ? Wren) Yes heard horrow stories of Wren but got two advantages. One will be covered by insurance or hope so if the kitchen goes south. i watched the Ralph Lauren documentary the other day, well with one eye and ear (!), and in their first flat they had a big collage on the wall of all the houses/places/interiors that inspired them. I just thought it was a nice idea if you're wanting to feel inspired to do the laundry (would also add a radio!).
I don't know if this is your kind of thing but I have meraki bits and bobs which could look great on the worktop, I also like the idea of the dishcloths in the mini wall basket. They're all available at design vintage whom have some lovely things. Maybe also add an artificial plant?
you could also paint or paper the ceiling to bring the height down and add a colour?

I've got dried eucalyptus which could also look nice in a jug. It absolutely stunk at first but the smell did go in a few days! Kids pictures could work in a collage or there are also various "picture frame" wallpapers around. What's on the unseen wall? You can also get those Scandi style ladders from which you can hang photos or pictures on pegs. Or something like this

6 years agoMinipie, as jazzy tiles not your thing, how about hexagonal? You can have a simple white grout, or coloured. They come in white and many other shades and in mini mosaic ones to big bold tiles. Just a thought!
