I would add a rug and more brass to the room. I can't see the door or above the radiator. But I would put a big mirror above the radiator and a small framed print above the chair under the light. did you want to spurce up your hallway or do a deeper makeover?

You can paint the stairs, radiator cover and half of the wall to create a panelling effect. You can go blush, white and gold or go for a full dramatic effect and add dark greys and gold

Lovely hall and the chair is cute. To my untrained eye it looks a bit askew because the wallpaper is a cool shade in an Art Deco style, whilst the floor, chair, rad cover and stairs have a more a relaxed country vibe, if that makes sense! Do you want to keep the wallpaper? If not, then something in a rustic country style would look good, or even just paint the walls a warm neutral shade and let the warm wood do the talking.

Wainscoting will look good. What colours do you like? do You like light and airy, moody and dark? what period is the house? Is it a town house, country cottage, newbuild?

Panelling is lovely, but might it make the hall rather cluttered? Will you go up the stairs too? As Marina has asked it depends whether you want light and airy or a moodier look. I think warm neutrals such as off whites or something like F&B Skimming Stone or Elephants Breath or Dulux Egyptian Cotton in the walls above the cladding and paint the cladding white. Something like this

You don’t always need to do the actual panelling. You can just create a subtle illusion of the actual wainscoting

i would like it to look light and airy i have a doorway at bottom of stairs would i get away with just panelling downstairs

I wouldn't go for panelling in here personally, maybe save it for another room? I would change the wallpaper and paint the railings on the stairs. I would swap the radiator cover for a radiator table (paint the radiator to blend into the wall) and add a large round mirror, lamp/s, flowers etc

I like panelling, it can add character to the space. Here an example of with and without wainscoting

Hi Catherine, we recently refurbished a hallway with the same problem. We used Farrow & Ball Down Pipe Grey for banisters and radiator cover which looked dramatic and the walls were painted in a soft light grey as a great back drop for artwork. Also lighting can dramatically change a space if you wanted to put in a new chandalier contemporary or classic it would also change the look. Good luck. www.minnieandgrouse.com
