Hallway lighting solution

The far end of our hallway is dark. We blocked up a door into what was the dining room when we knocked through the kitchen and dining room. There's a pendant near the front door, but nothing at the other end by the kitchen door. We'd like to keep a pendant near the front door but have some kind of light source further down. There's a mains smoke detector near the kitchen door that is in the way of installing a second pendant. The hall isn't symmetrical and the kitchen door opens back into a recess opposite the stairs where the door was blocked up, so no space for a wall light that end. Any suggestions? The hall is going to be redecorated and the front door replaced to give a bit more light.

Can't see your floor space but what about a floor lamp, or table with lamp on rather than ceiling light. We have 2 ceiling lights in hall. rarely used, and much prefer the lamp on the hall table as it gives much nicer atmosphere

There's no where to put a table unfortunately. Between the front door and bottom of the stairs we have a telephone seat. The oppositev wall is filled with a radiator. Then I want access to the understairs cupboard on the other wall. I'll try to attach a floor plan

Hi, Landing and loft conversion looks good, next tricky part will be picking the pendant you want. Please may I ask, have you opted for an electric velux window blind or have you simply left the window without a blind because the positioning of the window doesn't need a blind for privacy. Just something else I am thinking about. Hope the knocking down of the wall went well, I bet the space feels massive now. Thanks for asking. I am adding an extension to the kitchen with a little utility and toilet at the end. knocking the wall down between kitchen and diner to make open plan. Downstairs bathroom is becoming third bedroom. Upstairs I am adding a dormer at the back to make a bigger second bedroom and adding dormer to the front for bathroom which also means a new small landing. New central heating, retire etc. also changes outside garage has gone ready for a new one to be built. Attached are photos of my hallway, first is at top of stairs before little hallway extra was added second is the start of new hallway, walls coming out for bathroom door which is wher dormer will be the planning on putting the velux next to it. All very exciting stuff, I'm not the most imaginative so it's difficult to imagine what it will all look like in the end where to put lights etc, similar to you really

I leave a lamp on permanently on my landing, yes I know it's bad for the planet not to mention my budget but that's what you get for living in a 250 year old house with too little natural light.

Thank for all the comments. We will get the radiator cover. As for the paneling...I not sure this is in keeping with the Scandanavian theme...eventhou the master bedroom does have paneling which is very nice. We will likely get a bespoke storage unit made on the other side of the bathroom. Something a little fancier to the one already there which houses the washing machine/ dryer and laundry products. Overtime I think we will get a better feel for what works best - art, picture frames, mirrors etc... Keep the suggestions coming!!

I wouldn't let the smoke alarm stop you if that's what you wanted as it would be easily moved by a competent person.

thanks. do you know what rules there are for where a mains smoke detector should be? We had to have this installed when we did the work on the kitchen, so I thought it perhaps had to be at that end of the hallway. I'm not keen on a second pendant that might drew attention to the ugly smoke alarm

I don't think there any rules/regs that are that specific, sometimes which floor they must be on, but not specifically where on the ceiling, apart from sometimes manufacturers instructions about keeping certain distance from corners. At least that's my understanding but I'm not a pro. An electrician could advise and I suspect move it to the side, or along the hall between the existing and new lights.
