The windows and door where I work have been spray painted a while ago.. Can't say I like it.. Perhaps paint your stone inserts a pale grey instead?

I get your hatred for white uPVC... I share a similar dislike. I think pale grey (perhaps with a hint of green) could work really well with the reb brick

Rather than guessing what might look better for window colours, it’s now possible to measure the actual colour of your brick.

The resulting data will tell you to which hue family it belongs. From this, you can find light, medium, dark colours from the same Hue family to harmonise. Alternatively you might choose from the complementary Hue family.

Again, in each Hue Family there will be colourful more saturated colours or nearer neutral whites, greys and black colours.

It really takes lots of the guess work away and it’s fun to do!

Plotted the colour measurements of the brick work on The Color Strategist Color Wheel & used rye data to find near neutrals from the same Hue Family.

Found complementary colours to brick measurements. Colours from the same Hue Family are relatives. Colours from neighbouring Hue Families are good friends. Colours from complementary Hue Families are lovers!
When you work with colour this way, you know the combinations are technically correct & will work, so you just have to decide which you like best.

Top tip Marylee H. Wish I had been aware of this when I recently painted my windows, would have saved me a lot of time spent with a RAL colour wheel and the stone of my property!

The first image is the colour i was thinking. The windows are nice but like i say white feels a bit off the shelf, spraying seems to be a more logical of adding some personality.

Awe Gary - what a shame you didn’t have it for the RAL numbers! It works brilliantly with those too. So few people use it over here - yet. It really cuts out so much pfaff! This method of colour measurements- rather than just relying upon a good eye & experience is a colour game changer!

Hi Matt. If you like AF-155 are you saying what might look well with that? Are you thinking something darker/lighter/more colourful/more neutral/ complementary? It’s possible to work out ideas for all of those, just by manipulating the measured data.

I suppose it’s the same as learning a new language. If you don’t have the basics, it makes it difficult to follow down the line. 🤷🏼‍♀️

But its the same method of objective colour measurement, paint companies use to make sure your tin of paint matches the
particular paint chip you chose from their fan deck. If you can’t measure it, you can’t match it.

If you can measure a colour, then you can use those very measurements to compare attributes of colours.
No guessing or fabulous eye required.

Here are a couple of near neutral colours , darker than A155. Measurable attributes of a colour include -

Lightness (L) = how light or dark a colour appears, on a scale of 0 to 100. (0 being black - 100 being white )
Chroma (C). = how near to neutral or how colourful a colour is. ( the closer to 0 the nearer to a true neutral it is)
Hue Angle °. (h) = measures the dominant wavelength reflected from a colour. This tells you to which Hue Family it belongs & where in that
Hue Family a colour sits.

Those 3 measurable attributes alone, make it possible to plot a colour within a Hue Family & compare its attributes to others. Objective.

Two of those colour sit on the cusp between the end of the Yellow-Red Hue Family & the beginning of the Yellow Hue Family.
We know that as we measured them. A155 sits that slight bit bit further into the Yellow Hue family. From the L values you can see which is darkest. From the C values you can see which is that bit more neutral. They relate as they are part if the same Family. They differ because their values are slightly different. It makes it possible to compare their attributes in detail.

Someone else had RAL 1019 Grey Beige windows installed. He wanted a render colour to harmonise with the window colour but didn’t know where to begin. He wasn’t even sure if he wanted the render to be lighter or darker. So I found him examples of lighter & darker colours by looking at their colour measurements. No schlepping around showrooms or flicking through hundreds of paint chips needed. Why not simply use the information the companies use?

You barely have to understand what all the numbers even mean. You can just note where they are similar & where they are different.

Would farrow and ball cornforth white fall into this as well, that’s a nice light grey I like.

This analysis of Cornforth White was done by my mentor Lori Sawaya. She is using
different colour space data, but I think you will be able to understand how it equates to the above.See where the colour sits on the same Colour Wheel. It’s part of the same colour family as Weimaraner.
(Note - A155 was a close match to the mortar colour, between the orange bricks I measured)

To approximately equate the above analysis to the colours I sent you. Multiply the Value
8.08x10 = 80.8 Lightness and the Chroma x 5 = 2.95 in our colour space using LCh. So its approx 20 points lighter than Weimaraner & considerably closer to neutral.

Are you still finding it difficult to compare colours by their data numbers? It takes a little time to consider colour in a completely fresh way. But once it clicks,,,,,,,🌈

I really like soft sage green with red brick. It just seems to gel. I also really like Emmanuelle‘s different taupe shades. You could then paint the door and garage in the same or similar hue.

Yes totally agree, really like French gray by f&b. I really like the big door and shutter colours in that last photo
