light, open dining room/family room with awkward space - help!
Comments (1)Looks like a bonus to me! And so cosy and with great news. Almost a bit like a gigantic bay window. Just perfect for a contemplative cup of tea or for reading a newspaper. Things that spring to mind: reading nook (any smallish arm chair with a lamp next to it - or look up 'stories' for this) and/ or window seat (perhaps using a large footstool) and or a small writing surface (fitted right into the corner, preferably without too many legs on show or a small pedestal writing table (less desk, more cards). Hope this helps....See MoreNeed a new dining room table should I go dark wood or light oad?
Comments (4)If you're wanting a traditional look then I'd go for a dark table. You could look at getting an antique table and adding modern upholstered chairs. If you don't want somethng traditonal then I wouldn't limit yourself to a wood, just spend time looking at tables until you find something you love and then plan the decor around that...See MoreLighting for kitchen / dining room with vaulted ceiling
Comments (9)Hi Julia, it's a bit difficult making suggestions from a distance without seeing and 'feeling' the space but you have several options... pendant lights are certainly one, as Pavilion Broadway has suggested. You could have several dotted around the space, even hanging them at different heights - which could be fun. Alternatively you could use LED strip lighting around the room - this gives a very modern look and of course could be used in conjunction with other types of lighting. The attractive vaulted ceiling means you will be looking up at it so you don't want to be blinded by spotlights pointing down and remember you'll occasionally need to change bulbs so whatever you install make sure it is accessible. Depending on how you decorate and furnish the room you could consider a variety of lighting that works from the floor upwards. I think we are too often stuck on the idea that lights have to come down from the ceiling. They don't. Hope that helps but will be happy to discuss further. Best wishes, it looks a super project. Comments (3)I personally wouldn’t installs spots, prefer to keep them in a kitchen or bathroom. I have a pendant, 2 table lamps and a floor lamp in my dining room. I don’t need any task lighting in there but I guess it’s what you use the room for whether it’s purely dining? I think wall lights will be great with a table lamp or two (assuming that doesn’t cause too much work to the walls). I’d also put a dimmer switch on the pendant if possible...See More- 6 years ago
