Render or paint brickwork

Hi! PLEASE HELP!! Last year we renovated our house which has been a great success and now we’re finishing off outside. We are having our patio relaid in Indian stone this coming week after which we need to sort out the downstairs brick work. Our original intention was to render it in K rend as suggested by our builder but then our decorator said sand and cement was better so it can be painted in the future if necessary?? I’m now wondering whether a render is too modern a look against the upstairs & I don’t want a house of ‘2 halves!’..so I’m now wondering if I should just paint the downstairs brickwork instead of render. I want to ‘bring the house togethe’ if you know what I mean!!
