This is a tough one, your kitchen is a through way to I guess what is the main living space. Is the current kitchen in that area now? How does the layout work?

To look at, I'd remove all the wall units and work out if you have enough storage without. I wouldn't have the shelf along that wall, possibly hang art instead.

Would you consider moving the kitchen to the dining/utility area instead?

Hi Kat/ Ellie, thanks for your comments. Ellie, yes, current kitchen in both the original kitchen area and the attached dining/ utility. We used to have a small table in there but now have a big one in the new extension. Extension is the main daytime living space but we use the existing living room on an evening. The low shelf above the radiator is to try and incorporate a small breakfast area and plan is to extend into the utility end and have a couple of stools there. I can try leave out the wall units in the utility end.

Kat, yes, happy to play around with both areas, just have washer and sink etc plumbed in already so would prob try and keep them where they are.

My vote goes to flipping utility and kitchen too. Some floor to ceiling doors in front of the washing machine and such. Lower units opposite the hallway (shoes?).

Thanks Rinq, haven’t considered putting units down either side of the exiting utility and like your mock up. Would probably want to kitchen sink to stay where it is tho as like that I can see through to the extension from there, but will definitely consider the alternative utility layout and moving other appliances/cupboards to there. Thankyou.

I third swapping the spaces! It will make the space feel more connected to the new extension and flow nicely. To prevent guests walking through the utility room, perhaps look at putting it behind large bi-folding doors and putting a focal point (picture etc) in line with the hall door before opening up to the kitchen. I'd perhaps look at making the most of that long run, using this part for tall units as it is furthest from the light areas. It also keeps the working area compact once the food has been decanted from the fridge and pantry.
