Fireplace upgrade.

Looking to change the colours (look) of the fireplace and hoping for a little help if possible.

The back and bottom plates are a marble. I’m not sure if this can simply be painted or if it would be better to tile over it?

The wooden frame I will repaint white to freshen up, although would consider a dark grey or black depending on the colour of the marble.

The gold fire frame and front guard I have no idea what to do with? Suggestions welcome. I know you can get a black heat resistant spray paint but I’m not sure what kind of finish that would give?

Hopefully some creative mind can help me with this one in terms of colours and more importantly what to do with the marble and gold surrounds.

You want to paint the beautiful marble? I think I’ll have a quiet cry in the corner. 😓 Depending on your decor, I think the wooden surround would look lovely in a deep grey. Like this

Ok the marble isn’t so bad after all. Certainly when matched with the grey.

Any ideas about the gold?

your welcome from my experience you are always starting again with homes as styles and you change so you will have a head start. I'm always changing things with paint and reinventing rooms but over the years found that the classics especially if originals like yours will always stand the test of time and never go out of style but they dont have to look dated mix it up. if you tire of the carpet which I love think about making it into a huge rug bounded around the edge with what ever colour adorns your walls then would look stunning on a wood floor same with the sink could always be used in another room I would team it with black or even faux marble back drop oh endless fun and NOT AVAILABLE on the high street enjoy your home always

It depend on how tall the chimney has to be, if it is going to be inside or out, if you have to manoeuvre into a chimney breast further up the building, what kind of fire surround you want in your lounge and what type of fire or log burner. So I reckon it could be anywhere between £3k and £10k Personally I think this money could be used to get your central heating upgraded and then put in a feature (non working fireplace) although you can also get flueless gas fires that need no chimney. You should also check that what you envisage doesn't need planning ( will definitely require building regs). Your local authority has lots of information on the planning section of their website.

If you moved the proposed storage built in to the wall between the lounge and the dining room it would keep the room square allowing for the table and chairs to be aligned in both directions. Would work particularly well with a circular table. Also you could have floor to ceiling cupboards with glass doors at the top and solid at the bottom to hide the less lovely items. Narrow cupboards at 30 - 40 cm depth with lights could work well.

Haha! Is it a working fireplace? I think possibly spraying the gold black, but I’m not sure how hardwearing it would be. Hopefully some other Houzzers may have the answer to that.

Yeah fully working albeit rarely used. Wonder if it could replace actual fire and keep the rest. Back to google I go the price it.

I like Sonia’s colour suggestions - and the marble is lovely.
Regarding the gold fire trim - they are actually quite cheap to replace (just google fire trim and loads come up). You could have a new one made to measure in a different finish - maybe a matt black would look nice...

No problem. You can buy most “bits” for fireplaces separately online at very reasonable prices. I didn’t realise this until a friend helped me when we opened our fireplaces. With his guidance, we have sourced various things ourselves and saved a small fortune!

They also sell fire frets - the other gold bit on your fire. You could replace with Matt black.

We replaced our fret and trim. Was very cost effective and super easy. Just ensure you know your fires dimensions or better the make/model number

What a difference and exactly what I’m looking to do. Your old fire trim is very similar to mine.

Where will I find the model name/number?

Also where do you get the new chrome trim?

Not sure how much of a saving this is going to be as the trim and fret comes to £217 on the link provided by Sarah above. A full fire can be had for around the same in B&Q unless I've done this all wrong of course, which is highly likely.

Roscoe - have a look at other sites too - and also keep your eye on eBay for bits. Is it a gas fire? You might also need to cost up the cost of labour if you replace the whole thing, whereas a fret and trim change could easily be done yourself.

Hello, I’m really sorry I can’t find exact details of where I ordered. I remember it was a welsh company, as I called to check a colour!! It came to approx £80-100 total, so for us very cost effective. The model number is located near the controller for the fireplace, just a small sticker with manufacturer and a number. But measuring should be fine too. Thats mainly for the trims. Ours clipped in whereas I know some are magnetic
