kitchen worktops zenith

Hi, I am designing my kitchen and I am planning to go with white super matt handleless design, hob on the countertop (worktop 15x60, induction hob 60 x60, wortop 150x60) and undermount sink on the island ( central 50x 50 in 181x 90 island) . I was looking for durable and yes affordable worktops and I liked the idea of solid laminate, I like two zenith finishes, caldeira and cloudy nova but reviews on independent fora are not that great, people commenting in staining and material flacking off; I think I concluded that I will not use it for the countertop and I will use there wood but for the island where we will have an undermount sink, would zenith worktops be recommended or should I stay away from those, if they are ok - would you recommend them with the kitchen design I am considering? thank you in advance to anyone who shares their thoughts. with best wishes, Marta

I don’t see why they should stain and have material flaking off. We’ve not fitted Zenith solid laminate but have fitted Evolve so perhaps that’s another option for you. All I can comment on Evolve is that they are hard, very hard when trying to cut them regarding fitting. Never had an complaints with the Evolve brand.

Don’t forget wooden worktops need maintaining.

Perhaps look at an alternative like Mirostone?

I have the zenith worktop in my kitchen for under one year and it is now showing signs of chipping around the edges. I have contacted Wickes where I bought it and they said that chipping is not covered in the guarantee. I am gutted. Wishes we did not buy product. We now have to find ways of repairing it.

Hi Cake lady thanks for your comment. I have considered the wood effect tiles. However the kitchen adjoins a hall which has an oak laminate floor. I'm concerned the two different types of wood will clash. what do you think? Good to know they're low maintenance. I'm steering well away from gloss tiles as spent years trying to keep black gloss tiles clean in our bathroom. Finally replaced last year !

I think you've been given bad advice by the wood staining company. I have a wooden worktop in one of my rentals, so, I need to make that look good every time someone new moves in. It's a standard wood block worktop. It used to be a pale to mid tone colour. I decided that it would look a little more contemporary to go dark to match new flooring that I put in. I washed it down with meths to start with to remove as much of the old stain as possible and then let it dry for a couple of days. I then sanded it back down ( not easy around the sink, but do'able ). I then put on a new dark stain and oil, Osmo tint ( Terra ). Sorted and looks great. It was originally this colour, then faded due to the glass roof:- This is it sanded back, re-tiled and prepped:- As you see it's much lighter. It then got stained and oiled twice:- I must confess, that Mrs Math did the brunt of that project, she did all the tiling and stain / oil, I just did a bit of sanding one day and then went off to another job. Well done Mrs Math!

We have fitted Zenith once. Customer was happy with it. Haven’t had any further feedback and it has now been installed for around 6 months so I presume all is well and good. It is a very hard product to cut, so beware. As an alternative you could look at Fenix, Mirostone, Minerva or Dekton. All these should be fabricated and fitted by qualified fitters.
