First thing that makes the paper too busy is the stuffed room. So declutter. If nowhere else to put it, find a spacious cupboard/drawers. Paint it Yeabridge Green for example. Don't design around a sofa set you don't like. Find some pillows, rug and blankets that go well with the paper and floor. Make yourself a moodboard with curtains and such and then decide. Here are some F&B paint colors that could work well (I've tried them all, would not advise any other). Personally I like the first three on the left. But haven't seen your room (and taste), so no further suggestions..

The colour of the wall paint will depend on the amount and direction of the sunlight and will change when the artificial light is on and even on a different wall of the same room. I’d go for a cooler greyer tones. However be aware some greys can look greener with different lighting. Choose some samples, paint them on a large piece of paper and hang them in different walls of the room, look at them during the day and evening. You might find out that you like whites and greys with yellow and red undertones more. The blue pieces are very nice and will go very well with your light brown sofa It’s a very nice rug. I like the Middle Eastern style. Hi. That’s a lot of stuff to store in a small space:) but not impossible. I too think a floor to ceiling cabinet would be good for storing a lot of things. I’m thinking a half cabinet on the left with a clothes rail for coats on the right. Then underneath the clothes rail coming out at a right angle a narrow bench or even a box with lift up lid for shoes. Hard to explain so did a (very rough) sketch (see pic below).

Thank you so much for the suggestions/guidance so far! It has been a stressful process and the costs are all adding up around the house (new kitchen/bathroom etc) as is always the case I suspect when purchasing a period flat. colourhappy / Sarah L - I think I will remove it as a start as you both suggest, the arch is another concern of mine which I will reserve for later design stages! kazzh - unfortunately I want it gone altogether, I've set my mind on this :( Jonathan - thank you so much, I really do appreciate the words of wisdom. I agree I need a plan for the finished room and was hoping to complete this with time after moving in with a basic plaster/paint job. I cannot move in because I did not realise all walls and ceilings were wallpapered and after their removal the walls were in a state. I did remove both rails as it being the top floor flat with an already low ceiling height, it felt even more reducing. The goal is for a cosy, modernised period feel with a beautiful fireplace at its centre... Sonia - thank you for the design inspo, your home looks beautiful and warm! Yes it is a period flat, and the current fireplace is not original unfortunately so I'm happy to rid myself of it.
