Which worktop marble effect?

I’m looking for a Calacatta marble effect worktop. Heavily veined.

Granite, quartz, Dekton, Neolith, or solid surface. Or anything else?

25 or 30mm

Which is the most cost effective? And most durable?

Dekton makes some great surfaces, but their faux Calacatta marble isn't one of them. I find it looks too fake. If you want engineered stone, I'd go for either Caesarstone's Calacatta Nuvo #5131 (we just installed this in a client's two new bathrooms, see photo below), or their Statuario Nuvo #5111. The former is a bit less veiny--more subtle.

Mirostone is probably one of the cheapest. The nearest to Calacatta is Taj Mahal. Only this week I singled it out and told hubby I wanted it on my island. Alternatively look at Pietra Gold. Both solid surface.

Have you had a look at quartz (silestone, compac, cimstone etc)? They offer a lot of white coloured stone and it has the features of granite worktops with the look, feel and touch but they come without the added maintenance of granite worktops. Wood worktops compliment light coloured kitchens but they do come with extra maintenance that if not kept up to scratch will make the wood look nasty after a while. Corian is a solid surface material that comes with various white/grey/light colourways and a key thing that makes it popular is that the joins are invisible, so it looks like one giant piece. Personal preference and a lot of pictures will get you an idea of what it is you want. There are quite a lot of options out there so make sure you take some time to research each worktop material and brand.

Hello Josh, All that sounds very nice! I am not sure what you mean about staining though... It is true though you do have to be careful with lemons and salt, things that can eat away at the surface.. I would not rule out marble as it's wonderful and gr8 for cooking. Grew up with white marble worktop.. Making bread and pastry is very easy on the surface.. I have bamboo and that is really quite high maintenance and I wouldn't make dough or anything on that.. but if you are set against it.. You could have a fantastic polished concrete worktop or granite.. Very dark matt cupboards... Think Plain English or deVOL. : ))

Just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who helped with ideas, and especially Jen for giving me a bit of inspiration and a light bulb moment! You are so right, holding your nerves whilst it’s going up is the hardest!! . I did opt for a splash back only and extended it so it goes a little under the cupboards. Mixing granite and marble worktops in kitchen

Hi again, It has been a while but we now have samples of everything. The white marble top will be on the island which is the grey colour, with an oak end-grain butchers block. The dark granite will be on the white units around the perimeter and the floor will be engineered oak parquet laid in a herringbone pattern. In the photo the granite looks a bit darker than in real life. Both worktops will be matt finished between a honed and polished finish. We are not completely decided on the walls yet and I am considering timeless or purbeck stone/Johnston’s copy of purbeck stone as the budget is getting tight towards the end of our project! The room is north, north east facing and I would prefer to keep it slightly warmer toned, than too cool. We will decide on the splashback in the new year. I originally wanted antique mirror effect but it might be too much with all the different surfaces. The other alternatives I am considering are marble metro-style tiles or plain glass. If you have any thoughts I would be pleased to hear them. Thanks again for your help.

I actually wouldn’t mind laminate - but all of the compact laminates I’ve seen are 12mm & I’m not keen on that for Calacatta.

I don’t even mind standard laminate - but then I can’t have an under mounted sink & am worried how the edging strips would look when the worktop goes down the side of the island

Look for statuario effect finishes for more veining. Maybe try Neolith.

Joints tend to show up more in white or very pale worktops. It’s all to do with the core colour.
