Art that we've collected all through our 35 yrs together. Reminds us of the where and when as well as having the enjoyment of the art. Most of them are prints, some canvas. Family photos are usually on narrow ledges (we call them ancestor shelves) in a main hallway, so they can be switched out; also because they are inexpensively framed, and more for private consumption than the artwork. Most of the surfaces in our house are uncluttered, some would say austere, so the wall art warms things up.

Naturally, I think art on a lonely wall is great, it adds personality and character to any room or space. However, art is a reflection of a persons personality and a level of sentimentality. There are times that artwork on a wall just makes the peripheral view of the room look busy without a purpose. I'm a strong believer and try to work on the principle, that artwork needs to grab your attention and to subconsciously "click" as the perfect piece for that room, space or view of what you're looking at. Hi Charlotte, I would suggest putting a large framed print on the wall above the sofa and use this as the art focal point in the room, making use of that nice big space. On the wall next to the door I would put two smaller framed pieces that compliment the larger piece but are more subtle. Then above the fireplace you don't need another piece of art, instead a mirror would be perfect.
