I would lose the middle cupboard on the left to give maximum hanging rail. You also need to make sure that the hanging rail is of a usable height so that clothes don't hang on the worktop. The picture below is of mostly men's shirts hanging in my laundry room. That's a standard height larder cabinet for reference. I'm not as tall as you so you could easily go a bit higher. I'm not sure that you really need to close off the rail when entertaining, just shut the door to the whole room. I think doors will add an extra expense and get in the way. Ultimately, the room is what it is, and if there are clothes hanging in there, then that is what the laundry is there for. Also, I would consider the point about having 1 washing machine. Modern washing machines can do a load in about an hour, so maybe a cupboard would be more useful to you. Also the noise might be a bit too much. I think you're getting there, though.

Can anybody advise/offer comments on the below: We are looking to add a utility room to our ground floor (soon to be extended) off the main hallway. What dimensions are ideal for a utility room with a washer and dryer, sink and some storage cabinets? The utility room would also be the place that I would store all my cleaning items (liquids, mop, bucket etc) and the household hoover too. Any ideas for wall/shelf storage for these items? Thanks.

Thank you all for your suggestions. It's great to have some replies and I appreciate your time. I know it would make sense to have the shower with the toilet but my other half is a landscape garden and comes in from work covered in cement etc. The idea is that he has a seat by the door to put his dirty boots under, throw his clothes in a laundry basket and step into the shower. That way all mess is contained so when visitors come they don't have to see it but can use the WC. Two washing machines- one for filthy work clothes and one for my nice work clothes. We both work late hours and leave a lot of washing to be weekend. Also if one breaks down due to dirt, cement, occasional nails, we have a spare. I thought about stacking them but thought it might look imposing in such a small space and singly would give me more worktop space. Can I squeeze it all in?

Where is the door into the kitchen, where are windows. Is the small garage used for garage or can be used as a utility room / toilet?
