Open plan kitchen living too small ??

unfortunately we have had to stop work on our flat due to covid but it’s made me think ... rather than have the kitchen I have it in the livingroom as open plan and use the old kitchen space as a room instead.

the small box part of the livingroom has a new radiator installed there so was hoping not to have the kitchen area there but if It was the best option I would .. but then unsure of costs for moving pipes etc

I just don’t know and looking for advice

I think you could achieve a much better layout with the services of a concept planner. Karen from One Plan is on here and is consistent highly recommended.

I don’t think the sitting room is big enough to cater for a kitchen too and then if you do do that what would you use the existing kitchen area for?

I know it’s the fashion to have open plan, but sometimes it’s nice to be able to sit in a lounge without having to look at pots and pans.

Hi Mewlz, I agree with OnePlan, defining the zones is the key. If the kitchen has not be done yet I would consider too a hidden kitchen or a more 'living room' kitchen design. I have to say that IKEA is great for give you a flavour of a multifunction compact living, just browsing the images of the dressed open spaces will give you plenty of inspiration. I attached a couple of option thinking to play with what's on your plan at the moment. If you do have an empty space (no kitchen or fittings) then we can really get more creative though. The table for 6 seem a bit large for the size of the property. Keep all in proportion with the space when choosing furniture. However if you do need a large table you may want to consider a foldable one. Wherever you first put furniture you will likely move it, so don't worry to much now. As far as warming it up the obvious thing is to add colour to the walls- you could get a wall paper to add pattern. Short term you might just prefer to get a rug.

I think it's more important how you consider using the space. Do you want separate spaces or do you want to zone spaces in a large setting? Alternatively, you could opt for semi open plan designs which I prefer as it always provides that little bit of privacy between different rooms. I think food smells always diffuse and can be dealt with using a good extractor and a couple of open doors)/ windows and therefore shouldn't be the main basis for you setting the structure of your home. all the very best

Hi there, We recently reconfigured our downstairs as part of a complete renovation and have to say that having a professional on board was a life saver! We used Gina from Create Perfect (above) and she helped us work out how to configure the space to work best for our life. For what you'll spend on the building work and / or a new kitchen you'll probably be very pleasantly surprised by the cost (hundreds rather than thousands) A good designer will come up with 3D images of different layouts and configurations and from there you can pick your favourites and get them to take them a step further so you end up with 3D renders and also YouTube videos of 'walk arounds' in the space, so you can see exactly how the space would look and feel. Here's a few from ours if it helps... we're not finished but it does show how much Gina helped us with a vision to take three separate rooms through to a new layout for our downstairs (we have a separate lounge not included) Separate rooms to start with and a floorplan I was brain dead from looking at... The 3D pics we had to help from our designer... And a few of how it looks so far (lots still to do and most of the furniture still missing / makeshift at the moment but you'll get the idea) Without the help of a professional designer in deciding the new layout goodness knows what we'd have ended up with! There's only so many times you can look at a floor plan and try and imagine how it will all turn out! Good luck whatever you decide- sounds like an exciting project

How about swapping the bedroom and sitting room around? No idea of costs, but I think the bedroom would work better as a kitchen/dining/living room. The existing kitchen and shower room could be reconfigured to provide a bathroom and a utility, or even a walk-in wardrobe 🤔

It’s not easy to swap kitchen and bathroom positions in a flat because the wastes can’t easily be moved. What are you trying to achieve? Are you trying to make an extra bedroom or office?
