Kitchen Design Advice

Hi,
I'm planning a kitchen renovation and will pretty much have a blank canvas once the building work is complete.
Any advice on the proposed layout and is there anything I've not thought about or doesn't look right?
Thoughts and feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Personally I hate straight corner base units. They are such a struggle to get into the far end without kneeling down and scrambling around. I would always plan for a 900L given the available space in the corner then you have access to the whole of the corner. You can have separate doors to open or hinge them together making them open as one.

I also think that a 600mm drawer pack is next to useless. Too narrow to store any substantial saucepans in. Aim for an 800mm.

Regarding the end panels don’t have Tongue and Groove design. It just dates a modern shaker look kitchen.

I’ve recently had a complete kitchen renovation done and I would recommend a 1000mm 3 drawer base unit under the hob rather than a cupboard. A corner carousel is definitely better than a straight end corner unit. Would also suggest a full height pull out tower unit if you can fit that in along the back wall. Replace any cupboard base units for drawers, it’s a far better use of space and access to things.

Thanks for your comments so far; it’s really helpful to get other points of view. Maths Wife, I’m with you on the pantry idea! In fact, I spent a long time trying to work out if we could put one there by getting decent-width access to the garden via another route. But coming through from the front door involves a narrow hallway and getting through several internal doors, and coming via the utility room would involve losing washing space to add a door, and a sharp right-hand turn. Apart from the fact that we’ll ultimately re-landscape our entire garden, which will all need to come through the house, I also sometimes use a mobility scooter, and although I don’t intend to take it into the house, I’d rather be safe than sorry in terms of access. We’re compensating for the lack of pantry by planning on turning the area outside those doors into a little shaded patio with small table/chairs. So in theory we could have those doors wide open in the summer, and have garden views from both ends of the kitchen. minnie101, I didn’t explain the meals for 30 very well . We set up another table in the playroom in those cases, so about half the people in each room. So in the kitchen I just want to make sure that we can have table fully extended whenever we need it, which seats about 14. For the drinks area, yes we’re debating having bifold doors so there is max countertop space for a small sink, kettle etc. As you say, it makes sense and saves the countertop space elsewhere, just makes for an expensive cupboard The roof lantern size is indeed limited by the fact that’s the only area of the kitchen that isn’t double storey. Other than squaring out a corner, we are keeping to the current footprint, as it’s just about on maximum extension already. That area, in a bizarre design choice by the previous owners, is currently the utility room, which just about blocks any view onto the garden - we need the lights on even in summer, despite that being a south facing view. I’ve spent most of the last 6 years trying to understand WHY someone would choose that layout as part of a fairly substantial extension, even going so far as to move the kitchen, which was south facing, to the other end of the room. I’ve yet to think of a sensible explanation…. We are going for a fairly timeless/modern country look, hence the orangery rather than bifolds, and also want to maximise the light as it’s a long room. Fingers crossed, it will look something like this, although with a lot more planting around it and step-free patio.

Look at Earthstone as a quartz alternative. It’s a 6mm solid surface wrapped around a chipboard core, so it has most of the advantages of a solid/quartz surface at a fraction of the price. It can be shaped and sanded, left matte (which is what I did) or polished to a high gloss. I’m really, really impressed with mine—cost around £1300 for two long lengths plus breakfast bar AND delivery to Northern Ireland. Looks like Worktops Express don’t do it anymore, but available elsewhere.

I just measured my room with yours. Mine is 7.86 wide X 4.60 to the bathroom wall (where your extension is) We do have our lounge area extra but that extension is mainly the kitchen and dining area - plus casual seating in summer. Don’t despair. I would really recommend having a go with that software I mentioned and you can have up to 3 layouts for free (I’ve never paid!) and it’s pretty easy to work out. (I don’t sell it by the way 😂 I just love it!) With my room only being slightly wider than yours - If you only plan on using it for kitchen and dining then I would definitely make the utility larger and worry about the dog leg after. If you are having an island, then you will have units in that so do you really need units all the way around the walls? That seems a lot of units. Could you not make the dog leg pantry as I mentioned as you are talking 600 dog leg then units on top of that - that’s a huge space. You wouldn’t need units then around both corners. Just flinging some ideas about! Have you got rough kitchen plans or design? Where is your living space to be? It’s a great space and I think you need to step back and start at the basics with it with what you really want from the room and how you could fit them into that space. These are rough pics of my room which changes all the time as I move my dining table about ie by the window, also my tub chairs move around depending on the season! It’s a flexible space.

The waste disposal fits under the sink and as long as the disposal height fits in the sink base unit then you can fit one. You'll also need an extended sink flange for the disposal unit due to the thickness of the sink and the sink waste outlets have to be large enough (90mm) for the flange to fit. Have a look at the insinkerator website https://insinkerator.emerson.com/en-gb/food-waste-disposers where they recommend their evolution range for ceramic sinks as there's less vibration.

Personally I don’t like this layout for several reasons.

The main one is that the peninsula cuts the room into two narrow halves- in my opinion the remaining 2.4m on the far side of the peninsula is not big enough to be a dining area. I suspect this is the reason your kitchen designer hasn’t drawn in a dining table and chairs.

I also think the main working area in any kitchen is the area between the kitchen and sink and in this kitchen it’s tight.

I wonder if the wine chiller would be better elsewhere so that there is more storage around the hob. Perhaps it could go near a wall cabinet where the wine glasses are.

I think Jonathan has a good idea in running the kitchen along the back side of the room. It neatly removes any issues with the hallway door bisecting traffic flow, and allows you to have a long run of countertop.

Daisy and Fiona - You raise some good points about drawer size, storage and the end panels.

Jonathan - Thanks for taking the time to produce an alternative drawing.

I should have mentioned that the 2 windows at the front are quite low and at different heights (75cm and 70cm) from the floor, which would be too low for a sink, there is also a supporting pillar in the middle. I've gone for the sink on the back wall because it is higher (105cm) and the services are already there.

In your position I would be looking again at the building work you are doing and asking if the expenditure gets you a space worthy of the time and money spent.

So is the door on wall B the entrance into the kitchen from the rest of the house? I would be tempted to change the peninsula into an island. That would enable you to walk through to the dining area without walking around the peninsula. You could bring in the island closer to the units on the wall I think than the peninsula currently is (you only need 1m circulation space) and so your dining area would be a bit wider. It also gets rid of one of the corner units mentioned above. Makes a bit more use of the space in the bottom half of the drawing as well. Would be worth getting drawn up in any event.
