Windows Design Dilemma Dining Rooms

what size bifolds

Excuse the mess...
We knocked a stud wall down creating one large dining/ play room. We have a window dilemma.
Would one large bifold work across the whole back wall (approx 4m and bricking up either side and have it central). or a 3m bifold and position it in front of the table and have a 1200mm window to the left in the play area bit.

HI Rosanna,

If you go for the 4m large bifold then be sure to check with a structural engineer as you may need additional supports.

I would also conside if you have enough storage space if you were to loose almost the whole wall to glass.

I personally would opt for the 3m bifolds with a window. I have 2 sets of bifolds on a right angle and all of the glass can make the room very cold.

We have a kitchen diner and opted for a window along with a seperate bifold. One advance is being able to open the window rather than having the door open for fresh air

A larger window to the smaller bifolding doors would mean you get more kitech units, therefore more storage. So it would be beneficial to have a large window rather than bi folding doors on the smaller side. Saying that, Bi-folding doors do look great and they make the place feel more spcious. So the other option you have is to support the upper part of the wall with a RCJ (Steel) and have the bi-folding doors all the way across which would look great. Hi Patricia Suarez, Thanks for posting. Our bricks were re-used and the garden is quite small so some added light from the render would help. I have seen some projects with just the bricks but they tend to have big/long gardens and lots of light too. We don't have either -so def need the render and some extra light.

Those are the original bi-fold doors to the outside. I note that the kitchen wall, back door and window were never knocked through either. Thus, I imagine that the reception area used to be a large conservatory. Although it now has a ceiling, i'd check that it has been insulated correctly, and that the doors and walls etc can come down without affecting the heat in the house. If that's the case, and hopefully it is. then I wouldn't use the dining area as a new lounge as ithas no natural light. The kitchen too must be very dark as the old conservatory has cut off the light to that too. There are a few options once you have ascertained if the conservatory / extension is to standard to use as a stand alone room:- All depends on budget really and the look you're going for.

Have you thought of sliders instead? Really slick and less bars to spoil the view.

I’d have a 3m slider and a window. Bifolds are not as good compared to sliders (I’ve had both)

thank you for the advice. We were planning on removing the back door which is just on the side of the house and putting in larger window. Do the sliding doors open / lock from the outside?

They lock from inside like a normal door with a key & lever. You can have a lock on the outside too I think if you want to use it as a traffic door

We use our slider as a back door, so yes they lock inside and outside like an ordinary door.

adding to this... what colour bifold/slider should we opt for. the rest of the house is white.
would anyone suggest white in and out side or white out and grey anthracite inside? the two other windows that we are adding in will probably have to also match
