Help with Tile Trim colour

Hi!

Looking for help with suggestions on trim to use for the below tiles. The trim will go around the shower niche, as well as along the top of a half height false wall that is being built to house the concealed toilet cistern and the tap vales, which are wall mounted.

The shower head and taps are polished brass, with the shower screen trim and towel rail a very dark grey/anthracite/black. The grout will likely be similar to the photo, possible a shade lighter.

So I am left to pick between black or brass (I think), brass makes me nervous as we have splashed out on unlacquered solid brass fixtures and I don't want a clashing brass. Black is going to be very dark against these tiles. There is no chrome in the room and I'd like to keep it that way!

Everyone has been super helpful on here with previous questions – hopefully the above makes sense!

Suggest a gunmetal or brushed nickel tile trim. I have used brushed nickel and it doesnt stand out when the tiling is finished.

I totally empathise with the differing shades of brass dilemma. My experience has been that unless the items are directly next to each other, the eye tends to blend the different shades together and just register them as “brass”. If that suits the overall scheme better I think it will be fine.

Hello. There are a couple of options with regards to metro tile trim depending on the look you are after. To keep it simple, clean and more contemporary go for a small pencil trim alternatively there are bevel trims which are more authentic to the metro tile look but chunkier and more decorative. When tiling bath panels please remember the underside of the bath needs to be accessible for plumbing maintenance reasons so either create an access panel or ensure the whole of the bath panel is still removable. The bathroom will look bigger if you use the floor tiles.

I love your worktop, I think it looks really classy and looks perfect with the cashmere. I would look at something like Skimming Stone as a wall colour and then it's sample time for tiles, lots of them. Avoid anything that looks pure white or creamy. Creamy tiles (yellow hue) will clash with the units, pure white will make the worktop look dirty. I would look if possible at tiles that come in a mix. Mandarin Stone Hoxton tiles might be worth trying as they are all slightly different colours and so you are less likely to get a 'clash'. The Hoxton Ivory doesn't look ivory at all but looks fairly cool so might be worth looking at. You would need more that one sample though as they are all different. They also do pink, and grey, might be worth trying. Zelige tiles are horribly expensive but really bounce light around. They look more like a 'texture' than tiles, this could also be an option. When you look at tiles, ask yourself are they blue-ish, green-ish, yellow-ish or pinkish? Avoid yellowish at all costs with cashmere, avoid greenish, try to avoid blue-ish and so taupe or pink (greyed shell colours) will possibly work. As an accent colour, amber looks really good.

Thanks all for your help. Yes we are only having patterned floor, wall tiles in wet area largish white. I love the look of wood vanity but when we saw it in showroom it just wasn't quite right, being wood effect. When I swapped for blue vanity in my picture it flet better to me as we will have loads of wood elsewhere on house but what others may see as a boring/dull blue is actually quite adventurous for us! I've posted again on my 'final' decision. Thanks for the help. My nerves are much calmer now with all your friendly and wise input.

Hi Nicola, when thinking about the outside of your house it's always important to consider the style of your home (when is was built) and what others on your street have. There are some rules on what the local council will permit too, so best to check with them first. Whilst it's nice for everyones home to have a unique personality, i believe it looks best when colours and design are in keeping with the original character of the house and road. 1950's homes are typically mid century, so think simplicity and clean lines. White wood siding in white can be a nice way to bring character to the houses facade. Plain, small format roof tiles in clay or slate are ideal materials for this era. I think your front door is where you get to have the most fun. Perhaps consider a colour. 1950's colours could be quite playful. I'd love to work with you on your inteior when the time comes. @88wj88 Thanks so much for the response – do you think it will clash against the other hardware in the room (brass and black) or it will sort of fade into the background? The latter is obviously my preferred option, I want something as inconspicuous as possible!

@pjdklm this is good intel - thanks! My concern is the shower niche as it runs the full length of our 1500 long shower, with the brass valves set just below, so I think if they do clash (which sod's law says they will!) it might end up being a bit of a mess. I'm finding out how much extra it will be for the tiler to cut angled tile instead of using trim so we don't need it...

I think if the trim is roughly the same colour as the grout, and with a matt style finish, the trim does blend in rather than stand out.

What colour are your tiles? Hard to tell from the picture.

I had the same dilemma as my fittings are brushed brass and I have black accessories (screen, rad & mirror).

My tiles are a light concrete /stone grey and I picked a trim that was a light grey and it disappears into the tiles.
. If you have a tile shop locally that deals with trade then you can go in and take your hardware with you and see the trims? Or even buy one to take home and try as you can return them.

They have a range of colours - brass is usually special order and so far all the brushed brass items Iver bought from different sellers have all matched so 🤞

I would only use a stand out trim on places you want to highlight. So brass trim on your recess might look lovely.
